The World Cup in Qatar 2022 is right around the corner. Next Sunday the world will come to a standstill to see the best teams on the planet in action. In a World Cup in which it seems that there is not a single team that starts as the favourite, Barça midfielder Frenkie de Jong believes that it may be the occasion for the Netherlands to win it. “I think we have a good opportunity to win the world cup”, declared the #21 of the ‘oranje’, moments before traveling to Qatar.
A team full of stars
The Dutch team has a squad that is up to the task, with proper names such as Van Djik, Memphis Depay, De Ligt or Frenkie himself. Barcelona’s midfielder did not hesitate to acknowledge that they have a squad that can fight for the World Cup. “We have individual quality and we will do everything in our power to win the title.” The Culé midfielder also highlighted the integrity that the Netherlands has shown. “As a team we are very strong.”
Nevertheless, Frenkie de Jong is clear that the selection directed by Louis van Gaal is not one of the main favourites, like Brazil, France or Argentina may be. However, he has no doubts about the capabilities of his team. “I think there are many teams with great quality, but I’m not sure if there are also many teams that are better than us.”
The World Cup in Qatar will be the first for Frenkie de Jong. He played his first Euro Cup in 2020, in which the Dutch team fell in the round of 16 against the Czech Republic (0-2). Frenkie experienced a metamorphosis in recent weeks with Barça, in which went from being a player who was on the list of possible transferable players to being a fundamental piece for Xavi Hernandez’s squad. The Barça midfielder (25 years old) has the opportunity to shine in the first World Cup of his career.
