Barcelona have taken an important step in the market, and Alessandro Bastoni’s case is no longer just simple interest. The situation has clearly moved forward, because the club are now in contact with the Italian defender’s camp and are working on the key conditions of a possible deal. The main focus of those talks is on contract terms and salary, which shows that Barça are trying to understand exactly what would be needed before deciding how far they can go.
That does not mean the transfer is close to being completed. What it means is that the operation has entered a more serious phase. Bastoni has been one of the main defensive targets for months, and Barcelona now appear to be treating him as a real priority rather than just another name on a long shortlist. Reports over the last week have repeatedly described him as one of the club’s biggest goals for the summer.
Barça have limits they do not want to cross
Even while advancing in the talks, Barcelona are keeping some very clear red lines. The club do not want to damage the long-term planning of the squad in order to make the operation happen. That is why recent reporting around the case has also stressed that Barça are being careful with the structure of any possible deal.
One of the most important details to emerge is that Gerard Martín is not viewed as a player Barcelona want to use as part of the operation. There has been outside market noise around possible swap formulas, but other reporting linked to Fabrizio Romano’s line says Barça are happy with Gerard Martín and do not want to include him. That forces the club to think about other ways of building the deal, whether through fixed payments, instalments or bonuses.
A real operation, but still a difficult one
The fact that Barcelona are already talking to Bastoni’s representatives changes the whole feeling around the story. The club are no longer only watching from a distance. They are actively trying to understand whether the move can be made workable from the player’s side before confronting the much harder part of the deal: Inter Milan.
That remains the biggest obstacle. Inter still see Bastoni as a major figure in their project, and there is no sign that they will make his departure easy. Different reports continue to place the possible transfer cost in a very high range, which means Barça will still need creativity and financial discipline if they want to turn these first talks into a real negotiation between clubs.
Bastoni is no longer just an idea
So the situation is now much clearer. Barcelona are already speaking with Bastoni’s camp, they are studying his salary demands, and they see him as one of the major priorities for the defence. At the same time, the operation is still far from simple, because Inter hold the real power in the final stage of the deal.
What has changed is the level of seriousness. Bastoni is no longer just a market idea for Barça. He is now part of a live operation that the club are genuinely trying to build.
