João Cancelo’s future at FC Barcelona has entered a decisive phase. The latest reporting says Al Hilal would ask for around €15 million to let the Portuguese full-back leave this summer, a number that changes the entire shape of the operation.
Inside Barça, though, the stance remains firm. The club only see Cancelo staying if he arrives for free, meaning he would first need to terminate his contract with the Saudi side and land in Barcelona as a free agent. That is still the preferred formula at Camp Nou.
There is no real intention to negotiate any other route. For Barça, paying a transfer fee for this deal would go against the financial logic they are trying to apply to the squad this summer.
Flick wants him… but Barça set the conditions
The internal picture is clear. Hansi Flick has approved Cancelo’s continuity, pleased with his performances, his versatility and the immediate impact he has made on the team. The German coach values him as a player capable of solving problems on either side of the defence.
The Portuguese defender has responded in both full-back roles and has become a very useful tactical wildcard. Flick’s public praise after the recent win over Rayo only reinforced the idea that the coach is very happy with what Cancelo offers.
But one thing is the sporting desire, and another is the economic reality. Barcelona are not willing to pay a transfer fee, and that is why the €15 million being demanded by Al Hilal acts as a major brake on the entire deal.
The key is Cancelo himself
Everything now depends on the player. If Cancelo wants to stay at Barça, he will need to take a major step: negotiate his exit from Al Hilal and arrive with his release in hand. That is the only path that currently fits the club’s plan.
It would not be the first time he has made a financial effort to prioritise Barcelona. The club continue to believe that his personal desire to remain could become one of the most important factors in the case. Deco has even highlighted Cancelo’s affection for Barça as something unusual and valuable in today’s market.
But this time the sacrifice would be even greater. Cancelo’s salary in Saudi Arabia is far above Barça’s reach, so he would not only need to leave for free, but also accept a significant wage cut to stay at Camp Nou. Reports around his Al Hilal move placed his earnings at a level completely outside Barcelona’s current structure.
Barça already have alternatives
Even with the optimism around Cancelo, Barcelona do not want to depend on just one scenario. If he cannot secure his freedom or does not accept the financial conditions, the sporting department are already looking at alternatives in the full-back market.
The roadmap is simple. Keep Cancelo if the conditions are met, or activate Plan B if they are not. The club’s priority remains clear, but they are not prepared to compromise their financial line to make it happen.
All or nothing in a deal with one clear line
The Cancelo case can be reduced to one very simple idea. Barça want him, Flick approves him, but the club will not pay a transfer fee.
If the player manages to free himself, his continuity becomes a very real possibility. If not, the door is likely to close. And that is the key to the whole story: €15 million for Al Hilal, or zero cost for Barça. There is no middle ground.
