Alejandro Grimaldo has emerged once again as a very interesting opportunity for FC Barcelona. The Bayer Leverkusen full-back is reportedly keen to return to Spain this summer. According to Matteo Moretto, he could be available for a fee of around €10 million.
That figure completely changes the perception of an operation that seemed far more complicated only a few months ago. Grimaldo offers experience, immediate performance and a strong connection with La Masia. His profile also fits a position that Barça are currently reviewing closely.
The blaugrana club continue to study several names for the left-back position this summer. Marc Cucurella, Andrea Cambiaso and other profiles remain on Deco’s shortlist. However, Grimaldo offers something unique: low cost, proven quality and a deep understanding of the Barça philosophy.
A price that changes everything
The biggest attraction surrounding Grimaldo is the transfer fee now being discussed. For around €10 million, Barça could sign a proven full-back with significant European experience. In today’s market, that figure looks like a genuine bargain.
Bayer Leverkusen could be open to negotiations because the defender’s contract expires in 2027. That situation forces the German club to decide whether to renew his deal or cash in while they still hold leverage. If Grimaldo pushes for a return to Spain, the door could open even wider.
For Barça, such an operation makes perfect sense within their current financial reality. Deco must strengthen the squad without compromising Financial Fair Play or jeopardising other priority signings. A reliable left-back for €10 million is far easier to justify than many alternative targets.
La Masia still matters
Grimaldo knows the Barça environment better than most potential signings. He spent years developing in the club’s academy before eventually leaving to continue his career elsewhere. Although he never established himself in the first team, his talent was always highly regarded.
His move to Benfica became the turning point that accelerated his development. Since then, he has matured significantly in both Portugal and Germany, becoming a complete modern full-back. His attacking contribution, tactical understanding and consistency have all improved dramatically.
That journey means Barça would not be signing the youngster who left years ago. They would be signing an experienced international player entering the peak years of his career. That distinction is important when evaluating his potential impact.
Flick wants more solutions
Barcelona already have Alejandro Balde as their starting left-back, but the position remains under review. Reports suggest the club would consider listening to significant offers if an attractive proposal arrived. As a result, Deco is preparing several scenarios before making final decisions.
Grimaldo could immediately provide competition, depth and experience without requiring a massive financial commitment. He would also bring excellent crossing ability, set-piece quality and strong offensive production from wide areas. In difficult matches, those qualities can make a major difference.
Unlike many foreign targets, he would not require a lengthy adaptation period. He knows Spanish football, understands the expectations at Barça and would arrive fully prepared to contribute. For a team aiming to compete immediately, that matters a great deal.
A bargain that will attract attention
Barcelona are unlikely to be the only club interested if the price truly sits around €10 million. Several European sides could view the deal as an excellent market opportunity. Clubs looking for immediate quality rarely find players of Grimaldo’s level available for such a modest fee.
The final decision will depend on the player’s priorities and the sporting project offered to him. Grimaldo wants to return to Spain, but he will also want guarantees regarding his role. Barça can offer emotional appeal, although the club must first clarify its defensive plans.
For now, Grimaldo remains one of the most logical options available to Deco. He combines affordability, experience and tactical reliability in a way few targets can match. And that is the twist: Barça could bring back a former La Masia talent for a fee that barely exists in today’s market.
Caution note: This article is based on reports from Matteo Moretto and current transfer speculation. At the time of writing, there is no official agreement between FC Barcelona, Bayer Leverkusen or Alejandro Grimaldo regarding a transfer.
