FC Barcelona have already defined their strategy to strengthen the attack this summer. The plan being discussed internally is built around two very specific moves: extending Robert Lewandowski’s stay at the club and then making a serious push for Julián Álvarez as the major attacking signing of the new project. Reports from Cadena SER say Barça believe the Julián deal is possible and are shaping the forward line with that idea in mind, while Laporta has also publicly opened the door to renewing Lewandowski for another year.
The club’s idea is not to break with the present, but to build the future without losing stability. That is why Barça want to keep the Polish striker inside the project, although in a different role from the one he has had until now. The renewal being considered would be for one more season, and under lower financial conditions than his current deal.
Inside the offices, the feeling is that Lewandowski can still contribute, but no longer as the only true attacking reference. The objective is for his experience, presence and goalscoring instinct to help support the new number nine who arrives in the summer and to make that transition smoother inside the dressing room.

Julián Álvarez is Barça’s all-in attacking target
That is where the big name in the project appears. Barça see Julián Álvarez as the chosen striker to lead the attack in the coming years. According to the most recent reporting, the club believe they could sign him for less than €100 million, which is one of the reasons why the operation is still being treated as difficult but realistic rather than impossible.
Inside the club, there is also a belief that his profile fits Hansi Flick’s footballing idea extremely well. Mobility, pressing, link-up play and goals are the qualities that make him so attractive as the player Barça would like to build around in the next phase of the attack. That stylistic fit is an inference from the reporting about Barça’s interest and the kind of striker profile being targeted.
At the same time, Barça know the move would only become truly real if the surrounding conditions shift in their favour. Atlético do not want to make a sale easy, and Julián remains tied to a long contract. Reporting this week has stressed that Atlético see him as a major figure and are not entertaining the idea of a simple exit.

The gesture that could change everything
That is why there is one key condition inside the Barça plan. Laporta wants Julián Álvarez himself to take a public position and send a clearer signal that he is willing to change clubs. Without that move from the player, Barcelona do not want to launch themselves into a complex negotiation against a direct rival with no interest in opening the door. Recent criticism around the case has centred precisely on the idea that Barça are waiting for that signal from the Argentine.
In other words, the transfer does not depend only on money. It also depends on the message coming from the player himself. That is one of the biggest reasons why the operation is still alive, but not yet close to becoming something concrete. Julián has recently kept his public comments ambiguous, which continues to leave the situation open.
A summer that could define Barça’s attack
The plan, then, is already taking shape. Keep Lewandowski as a transition figure and push hard for Julián Álvarez as the new attacking leader. If Barça manage to pull that off, they would solve one of the most important issues in the squad: refreshing the front line without losing hierarchy and experience in the dressing room.
Now everything depends on how the market moves. But the idea at Camp Nou is clear: the future of the number nine position is already in motion.
