Andrea Cambiaso has once again emerged as a serious option on FC Barcelona’s defensive agenda. The Juventus full-back is being considered to strengthen the left flank, and his name is gaining momentum as Deco evaluates several alternatives for the position.
The Italian is not a new target for Barça’s sporting department. Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that the club have been monitoring Cambiaso for months as part of a shortlist featuring three candidates. He also clarified that there are currently no talks between Chelsea and the player despite recent rumours.
His profile is particularly attractive because he offers something Hansi Flick values highly in a demanding season. Cambiaso can operate as a left-back, wing-back and even on the right side when required. That versatility makes him a very appealing option for a defence that could undergo significant changes this summer.
A full-back capable of solving multiple problems
Barça are looking for defenders capable of handling heavy workloads while also offering tactical flexibility. Alejandro Balde remains an important figure, but the club want greater competition and depth in the squad. In that context, Cambiaso appears to be a logical sporting solution.
His ability to perform on both flanks allows Flick to imagine different structures throughout the season. The German coach values players who can adapt without forcing major tactical changes. Cambiaso would bring energy, attacking awareness and a strong understanding of positional play.
According to Fichajes.net, that versatility is precisely one of the qualities most appreciated by Barça. The report also claims the club have requested information about the conditions of a potential transfer. There is no formal operation underway, but the monitoring remains active.
Juventus will demand a high fee
The biggest obstacle remains Juventus’ stance. The Italian giants have no need to sell cheaply and are negotiating from a position of strength. In 2024, the club officially extended Cambiaso’s contract until 2029, giving them complete control over any future negotiations.
Reports in Italy suggest that Juventus value the defender at around €50 million. That figure forces Barça to think carefully before making any move. The Catalan side cannot afford to enter an expensive bidding war for a full-back this summer.
Cambiaso also continues to attract interest from other major European clubs. Manchester City have been linked with him in the past, while Premier League teams continue to monitor his progress. If an English club makes a serious move, the operation could become significantly more difficult.
Deco is comparing different options
Barça are not relying exclusively on Cambiaso when it comes to strengthening the left side of defence. Marc Cucurella has also emerged as a player followed closely by Deco in recent weeks. The difference lies in the profile, cost and overall fit within the squad.
Cucurella would bring Premier League experience, defensive intensity and familiarity with Spanish football. Cambiaso, meanwhile, offers youth, versatility, long-term potential and experience within the Italian tactical system. Both players could improve the squad, but they represent different approaches.
Deco must decide whether the priority is an immediate solution or a longer-term investment. He will also have to assess whether any movement involving Balde changes the entire picture. Without significant sales, signing an expensive full-back will be extremely difficult.
A signing that makes sense, but remains complicated
Cambiaso represents an attractive opportunity because he combines youth, experience and tactical flexibility. However, Juventus are unlikely to open the door without receiving a substantial offer. That is why Barça continue to keep him on their shortlist rather than launching a formal offensive.
The club’s defensive planning still depends on several unresolved situations. Jules Koundé, Balde, Cucurella and other names could all influence Deco’s final strategy. Within that landscape, Cambiaso remains one of the strongest candidates if the financial conditions become favourable.
The final outcome will depend on Financial Fair Play, player departures and Juventus’ willingness to negotiate. Barça are watching closely, comparing options and waiting for the right moment to move. And that is the twist: Cambiaso may not be the headline name, but he is rapidly becoming one of Deco’s preferred targets.
Caution note: This article is based on reports from Fabrizio Romano, Fichajes.net and ongoing transfer speculation. At the time of writing, there are no official negotiations or agreements between FC Barcelona and Juventus regarding Andrea Cambiaso.
