Julián Álvarez has once again shaken the FC Barcelona market completely this summer. According to information published by MARCA and picked up by Into the Calderon, the Argentine striker has opened the door to a possible exit from Atlético Madrid and would see Barça as his preferred destination. That version has not been officially confirmed by the player or either club, but it fits with the tension surrounding his future in recent weeks.
Inside Barça, they have long seen the Argentine as the ideal heir to lead the new attack. His profile is hugely liked because of his mobility, pressing, goals and ability to play in several attacking roles. The problem is that the current scenario leaves the Catalan club in a very delicate position, because Atlético do not want to open the door easily and PSG continue to push very hard.
Barça are his first option, but do not control the deal
The big novelty in this story is the player’s reported will. If Julián Álvarez truly prioritises Barça, the whole board changes from a sporting perspective. At Camp Nou, they see him as a complete striker, capable of fitting immediately into Hansi Flick’s system and taking on the attacking weight left by Robert Lewandowski’s exit.
Even so, that preference does not solve the biggest problem of all: the price. Atlético Madrid tied the striker down until 2030 when they made his signing official in August 2024, so they hold a very strong contractual position. The same reports place Atlético’s demand at around €150 million, a colossal figure for any club and even more for the current Barça.
That is why the player’s desire would be essential, but not enough on its own. Barça would still need a financial structure, major sales and Atlético’s willingness to sit down. Without all of that, the operation remains extremely difficult.
PSG remain the major threat
The other big actor in this story is PSG. In Paris, they have been following the Argentine for some time and have one clear advantage: the financial capacity to sustain a gigantic operation without forcing the structure too much. That is precisely why Barça do not want an open auction.
That is the big difference between desire and reality in the blaugrana market. Barça can be excited by Julián’s profile, but they know they cannot fight PSG equally if the operation becomes a pure money war. More than ever, the key would be the player’s own will.
If he really wants to wear blaugrana, he would have to maintain a very clear position. That could change the pressure around Atlético and reduce PSG’s advantage. But if he does not take that step, Barça will remain far from the numbers needed.
Atlético continue to resist
Inside Atlético, the blow would be enormous if the player finally decides to leave. Cadena SER already explained that there is concern inside the club about his future. Atlético want to keep him, although a sale is not completely ruled out if a gigantic offer arrives.
The situation, therefore, is not closed, but it is far from resolved. Atlético do not want to facilitate anything, and their position remains extremely firm. They know several major clubs are watching and will try to control the entire process.
Diego Simeone also added fuel when asked about the forward after the league finale. The coach suggested that the player himself will know what he wants to do, a phrase that has increased the feeling that the case is more open than it seemed months ago.
The summer’s great signing depends on Julián
The Barça conclusion is becoming quite clear. Julián Álvarez remains the club’s great attacking dream, and if he truly prioritises Barça, that decision could change many things. But the obstacle is still enormous: Atlético have him protected, PSG are pushing and the exit price is at superstar level.
Right now, the Argentine’s future depends less on sporting admiration and more on one question: how far he is willing to go to force the scenario he wants. If the player does not make a clear move, Barça will keep dreaming, but they will remain very far from closing the striker who excites Camp Nou the most.
Caution note: this situation is based on reports from MARCA, Into the Calderon and related market information, not an official transfer request or agreement confirmed by Julián Álvarez, Barcelona or Atlético Madrid.
