In 2019, when Malcom signed for Zenit, FC Barcelona secured “a capital gain in the event of a future sale of the player”. This seemingly minor provision could now result in a substantial financial benefit for the Catalan club as Malcom prepares to move to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia for a reported fee close to 60 million euros, combining fixed and variable components.
Back in August 2019, Barça announced the transfer of Malcom to Zenit for 40 million euros plus 5 million euros in add-ons. As per the agreement, if Al-Hilal’s payment exceeds this amount, Barcelona stands to receive a percentage (7.5%) of the difference. Therefore, if the Saudi club pays 60 million euros for Malcom, resulting in a capital gain of 20 million euros, the Catalan club will receive 1.5 million euros from the transaction.
While this sum may not drastically alter Barcelona’s delicate financial situation under the leadership of Joan Laporta, any additional income is a welcome boost. It is worth noting that Malcom had an outstanding 2022/23 season with Zenit, scoring 26 goals and providing nine assists in 33 games, earning him the distinction of being the top scorer and MVP of the Russian Premier League. This remarkable performance has now caught the attention of Saudi football, enticing Al-Hilal to secure the services of the talented Brazilian during the prime of his career, and potentially benefiting Barcelona in the process.
