Barça set their sights on Europe’s breakout winger

Barça set their sights on Europe’s breakout winger

FC Barcelona continue to monitor the market for young wide players. With financial control still shaping every major decision, the club remains focused on profiles with talent, upside and a price tag that could still be manageable. That is where one name from Portugal has started to stand out after several positive scouting reports.

According to information coming from the Portuguese scene, the player under close observation is Benfica attacker Andreas Schjelderup. The Norwegian winger was born on June 1, 2004, in Bodø, mainly operates on the left flank, stands at 1.76 metres and is under contract with the Lisbon side until June 2028.

This is not a random or isolated check from Barcelona. Inside the club, there is strong appreciation for his ability to beat defenders on the outside, burst in tight spaces and take on opponents in one-against-one situations, three qualities that are highly valued when Barça study attacking reinforcements for both the present and the future. It also fits a transfer strategy shaped by financial fair play restrictions and the need to move before certain players become unreachable.

His rise is already becoming visible across Europe

Schjelderup’s season helps explain why his name is beginning to gain momentum. With Benfica’s first team, he has already recorded 32 official appearances, 6 goals and 3 assists during the 2025/26 campaign, numbers that suggest he is no longer viewed as only a prospect, but increasingly as a useful and reliable option.

He has also made a noticeable impact on the European stage. In the 2025/26 Champions League, he has featured in 7 matches, played 422 minutes and scored 2 goals, figures that strengthen the feeling that he is ready to compete at elite level rather than only shine domestically.

His development has not gone unnoticed in the market either. Transfermarkt currently places his value at around €14 million, a significant amount but still far from the type of operation Barcelona would consider impossible under current conditions. That is exactly why the club sees this kind of player as a strategic opportunity if his progression continues.

A profile that matches Barça’s current thinking

Barcelona’s sporting department has spent time balancing marquee additions with younger players who still have room to grow. Schjelderup fits that formula because he combines youth, technical quality, experience at a major club and international exposure with Norway, all of which further increase his appeal.

For now, it would be premature to speak of a full offensive or advanced negotiations. What can be said is that there is genuine monitoring of a winger the club admire, one who is developing well at Benfica and increasingly making his way onto the shortlist being discussed internally. The player watched closely by Barça scouts against Arouca, and whose name is now gaining traction behind the scenes, is Andreas Schjelderup.
