March 1

1925 – Josep Samitier scores four as the first game of Barça’s Copa del Rey campaign ends 7-3 against Valencia at Les Corts.

1931 – Barça beat Racing Santander 1-0 away.

1942 – Barcelona beat Atletico Madrid 5-1 at home in La Liga with goals from Martin (4) and Bravo.

1953 – Moreno (3), Manchon (2), Basora, Kubala and Cesar all score as Barça beat Real Zaragoza 8-0 at home in La Liga.

1979 – Samuel Okunowo is born. Made 14 Liga appearances for the club from 1998-01.

1981 – Hours after scoring twice in a 6-0 home win against Hércules, Quini is kidnapped at gunpoint from his own front door. He is released unharmed after 25 days.

1995 – César dies

1997 – Barça fall to a 4-0 away defeat to Tenerife, conceding two penalties and having two men sent off. With thirty-seven league goals conceded so far is Barcelona’s worst defensive start in more than 30 years.

2005 – Barça cannot record a derbi win, instead drawing 0-0 with Espanyol in La Liga.

2008 – Ronaldinho scores his last goal for Barcelona in a 4-2 defeat to Atleti

2017 – Barcelona coach Luis Enrique announces he is to leave at the end of the season.

2017 – Messi, Rodriguez (OG), Suarez, Alcacer, Neymar and Rakitic all score as Barcelona defeat Sporting 6-1 at the Camp Nou.

2020 – Barcelona succumb to a 2-0 defeat away at Real Madrid, meaning they are now one point behind them in the title race.

March 2

1941 – Barça beat Athletic Bilbao 1-0 at home to end the season in fourth place. Escola the scorer.

1952 – César scores a hat-trick as Barça beat Real Madrid 4-2 at Les Corts. Vila Soler with the other goal.

1960 – Sandor Kocsis scores four in a 5-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, the most goals at the time scored in a single European game, in the European Cup quarter final. Barça go through 9-2 on aggregate. Footage here.

1981 – Quini kidnapping: La Vanguardia receive fake anonymous call saying “a separatist team cannot win the league.” Nunez declares there is “no news” but says several players have received anonymous threats. A letter emerges later that night saying Quini is fine.

2013 – Barça lose their second Clásico in a week, going down 2-1 at the Bernabeu. The first time in five years that Barça have lost three out of four matches.

2019 – FC Barcelona record a second Clásico win in 72 hours with a 1-0 Liga win away at Real Madrid.

1900 – The first photo of FC Barcelona is taken

1913 – Former Barcelona player (1939-43) and coach (1961) Luis Miró is born.

1946 – César scores as Barça beat Real Madrid 1-0 at Les Corts.

1974 – Barça a beat CD Castellon 5-0 at home in La Liga with goals from Rexach (2), Cruyff, Sotil and Marcial.

1979 – Albert Jorquera is born. Made 7 Liga appearances for the club from 2003-09.

1980 – In an historic assembly, the delegates agree to improve the capacity of the Camp Nou to 110,901.

1983 – Barcelona part company with coach Udo Lattek after disastrous home defeat to Racing Santander.

2005 – Rinus Michels dies

2016 – Barcelona beat Rayo Vallecano 5-1, extending their unbeaten stretch to a record 35 games.

March 4

1928 – Samitier scores a hat-trick in a 4-4 draw with Real Union at home in the Copa del Rey. Piera the other scorer.

1934 – Barcelona are beaten 1-0 away at Real Betis and end the season 9th placed in La Liga.

1944 – Gallego is born. Made 248 Liga appearances for the club from 1965-75, scoring 17 goals.

1951 – A general strike protesting social and economic conditions, triggered by a 40% rise in tram fares, reaches its climax. Supporters continue boycott after 2-1 win over Santander at Les Corts by walking home in the rain, leaving the trams empty.

1961 – Salva is born. Made 22 Liga appearances for the club from 1984-89.

1973 – Barça lose 1-0 at home to RCD Espanyol in La Liga.

2001 – Rivaldo and Raul each score a brace as Barça draw with Real Madrid 2-2 at the Bernabéu in the league.

2014 – Captain Carles Puyol announces he is to leave FC Barcelona at the end of the season.

2015 – Barça reach the Cup final winning all their matches in the competition so far for the first time since 1926, defeating Villarreal 3-1 (6-2 agg). Neymar (2) and Suarez the scorers. Jonathan Dos Santos scores against old club.

2017 – Lionel Messi scores twice as Barcelona dispatch Celta Vigo 5-0 at the Camp Nou. Neymar, Rakitic and Umtiti the other scorers.

2018 – Leo Messi scores his 600th goal for club and country in a 1-0 home win over Atlético.

March 5

1916 – Goals from Vinyals (2) and Martinez (3-0) see off Real Madrid in a friendly game at Industria.

1933 – Luis Regueiro’s late goal proves worthless as Josep Samitier’s two goals help Real Madrid beat his former team 2-1 in Madrid.

1953 – Former Barcelona coach (2000-01) Llorenç Serra Ferrer is born.

1958 – Barcelona draw 2-2 with a London XI in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup final first leg.

1986 – Barcelona beat defending champions Juventus 1-0 in the QF first leg of the European Cup. The 120,000 attendance remains the biggest in Camp Nou history.

March 6

1955 – Barcelona come from behind twice against Real Madrid to earn a 2-2 draw at Les Corts. Basora and Moll the scorers.

1959 – Lobo Carrasco is born. Made 262 Liga appearances for the club from 1978-89, scoring 49 goals.

1962 – Martinez, Evaristo, Pereda, Vicente and Verges all score as Barcelona beat Hamburger SV 5-1 in Antoni Ramallets’ testimonial game.

1981 – Clemente Gràcia dies. During the 1921-22 season he scored the most goals (59) scored by a player in a season at the time.

1987 – Kevin-Prince Boateng is born. Made 3 Liga appearances for the club in 2019.

2001 – Lionel Messi receives his playing license from the Catalan federation

2004 – Lionel Messi (16) makes his debut for Barcelona B in the Spanish third tier, a 1-0 win over Mataró. Footage here.

2006 – Frank Rijkaard asks Barça supporters to applaud Mourinho and his Chelsea team on to the pitch ahead of the upcoming Champions League game.

2007 – Eidur Gudjohnsen’s goal gives Barça a 1-0 win away at Anfield but the defending champions are knocked out on away goals by Liverpool in the Champions League.

2016 – Messi, Neymar and Suarez score their 100th goal of the season in a 4-0 win at Eibar.

March 7

1909 – FC Barcelona record a 3-1 win over Espanyol in the Campionat de Catalunya. Forns, Peris, Wallace with the goals.

1915 – Barcelona are defeated 4-0 by Espanyol in the Campionat de Catalunya .

1916 – Barça play Real Madrid for the second time in two days at Industria but are held to a 0-0 draw.

1943 – Barcelona beat RCD Espanyol 3-1 away in La Liga with goals from Bravo, Martin and Escola.

1992 – As at the Bernabéu, the Clásico ends in a 1-1 draw after the home side go into half-time a goal up. Koeman again the scorer for Barça.

1998 – Josep Escolà dies

2012 – First Champions League appearance for Cristian Tello, first CL goals for Tello as Barca beat Bayer Leverkusen 7-1. Leo Messi becomes the first player in the history of the Champions League to score 5 goals in one game.

2018 – Barça win the Catalan Supercopa again on penalties after a 0-0 draw with Espanyol.

1887 – Former Barcelona coach (1935-40) Patrick O’Connell is born.

1931 – Barca beat Arenas Club de Guecho 2-0 at home in the league.

1934 – Rodri is born. Made 82 Liga appearances for the club from 1958-68.

1934 – Martí Vergés is born. Made 188 Liga appearances for the club from 1956-66, scoring 15 goals.

1953 – Bio is born. Made 9 Liga appearances for the club from 1978-79, scoring 3 goals.

1961 – Before the European Cup match against Spartak Hradec Králové (4-0 to FCB) Luis Suarez receives the Golden Ball in front of 70,815 spectators

1986 – FC Barcelona suffer a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid away at the Bernabéu.

1998 – Hours after a vote of no confidence in Núñez fails, Barcelona win 3-0 against Real Madrid. Goals from Sonny Anderson, Figo and Giovanni all in the second half. Coach Van Gaal claims he’ll wear an elephant tie in celebration

2015 – Lionel Messi scores his 40th goal for the sixth successive season, scoring a hat-trick in a 6-1 win over Rayo Vallecano. FCB go top for first time since October.

2017 – Barcelona pull off a miraculous comeback, beating PSG 6-1 at the Camp Nou to go through 6-5 on aggregate.

March 9

1902 – Barça beat defending champions Hispania 1-0 at home in their penultimate match of the Campionat de Catalunya.

1930 – Barça are beaten 3-2 away by eventually relegated Atletico Madrid. Piera, Goiburu the Barcelona scorers.

1958 – Barcelona beat Real Valladolid 7-1 at home in La Liga with goals from Evaristo (3), Kubala (2), Ribelles and Villaverde.

1969 – José Antonio Zaldúa scores in his fourth-straight Liga Clásico as Barça draw 1-1 at the Camp Nou. Gento scored Madrid’s 87th minute penalty.

1997 – Barcelona’s 3-0 win over Compostela sees the debut of PPV television in Spain and also marks Guillermo Amor’s 500th game for the club.

2013 – Lionel Messi scores in his 17th consecutive Liga game as Barça beat bottom of the table Deportivo 2-0 at home.

1912 – George Patullo returns to Barcelona to appear in the side’s 3-2 Pyrenees Cup semi-final win over Espanyol.

1981 – Samuel Eto’o is born. Made 144 Liga appearances for the club from 2003-09, scoring 108 goals.

1988 – Ivan Rakitić is born

1991 – Barcelona beat Athletic Bilbao 6-0 away at San Mamés in La Liga with goals from Salinas, Stoichkov (4) and Bakero.

1993 – Barcelona beat Werder Bremen 2-1 at Camp Nou to win the European Super Cup 3-2 on aggregate, the clubs first Super Cup title. Stoichkov and Goikoetxea the scorers.

2007 – Leo Messi scores his first three Clásico goals to inspire Barça to a 3-3 draw against Madrid at the Camp Nou.

1990 – Barça beat Celta Vigo 6-0 at home in La Liga. Roberto (3), Amor, Laudrup, Salinas

1997 – Atlético Madrid president Jesus Gil threatens to withdraw his team from tomorrow’s Copa del Rey game after three of his players are suspended after Juan Esnaider feigned a headbutt.

1998 – Barcelona wins its second European Super Cup with a 3-1 aggregate victory over Champions League winners Borussia Dortmund at Westfalenstadion.

2012 – 2-0 win over Racing de Santander: Lionel Messi, with 30, becomes the Barça player that has scored more braces in all La Liga history, surpassing César (29)

March 12

1922 – Barça beat Sevilla 1-0 in the Copa del Rey quarter final first leg.

1951 – A general strike takes place in Barcelona.

1966 – Luis Milla is born. Made 54 Liga appearances for the club from 1984-90, scoring 2 goals

1979 – Gerard is born. Made 91 Liga appearances for the club from 2000-05, scoring 5 goals.

1997 – After being 3-0 down at half-time, Barça win 5-4 against Atletico in the Copa del Rey quarterfinal second leg. Goals: Ronaldo (47, 50, 72); Figo (67); Pizzi (82). Lack of public transport keeps the attendance down to 80,000. Milinko Pantic becomes the first ever visitor to score four goals at Camp Nou.

2013 – Barça come back from 2-0 down on aggregate to win 4-0 at home against AC Milan to go through to the CL QF.

2016 – Barcelona stroll to a 6-0 win over Getafe at Camp Nou in La Liga. Rodriguez (og), Munir, Neymar (2), Messi and Arda the scorers. The team however miss yet another penalty.

1924 – The Catalan XI plays Spain for the first time. Josep Samitier, playing for Spain, scores twice in a 7-0 defeat.

1940 – Francoist Enrique Pineyro, the Maquis of the Mesa de Asta, is installed as president of FC Barcelona.

1965 – Miquel Soler is born. Made 76 Liga appearances for the club from 1988-91, scoring 2 goals.

1973 – Edgar Davids is born. Made 18 Liga appearances for the club in 2004, scoring 1 goal.

1994 – Gerard Deulofeu is born. Made 12 Liga appearances for the club from 2011-15 and 2017-18, scoring 1 goal.

March 14

1909 – Camp de la Indústria, Barça’s initial stadium, is opened. It remains their home until 1922 when it is replaced by Camp de Les Corts.

1926 – Musteros scores four in a 7-0 away win over Zaragoza CD in Copa del Rey Group 2. Arnau, Alcantara and Carulla the other scorers.

1943 – Barcelona beat Real Oviedo 6-2 at home in La Liga with goals from Martin (3), Cesar (2) and Sospedra.

1900 – Emilio Sagi Liñán is born. Made 25 Liga appearances for the club from 1915-32, scoring 2 goals.

1925 – Barça beat Stadium de Zaragoza 5-1 away in the Copa del Rey with goals from Piera (3), Arnau and Sagi.

1957 – Víctor Muñoz is born. Made 224 Liga appearances for the club from 1981-88, scoring 14 goals.

2000 – Xavi scores his first goal in the Champions League as Barcelona defeat Hertha Berlin 3-1

2018 – Lionel Messi scores his 100th Champions League goal in a 3-0 win over Chelsea.

March 16

1913 – Barça plays its second successive Copa del Rey final, the first leg finishing 2-2 against Real Sociedad at Camp de la Indústria. Goals: Forns, Apolinario.

1930 – Ramón Alberto Villaverde is born. Made 162 Liga appearances for the club from 194-63, scoring 53 goals.

1930 – Barça are beaten 4-3 away to eventual champions Athletic Club. Diego, Arocha, and Bestit the scorers.

1938 – Fascists drop bomb on the club social club, causing serious damage. A few months later, the city was under fascist occupation. Under the command of the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, Italian aircraft stationed on the island of Majorca attacked 13 times dropping 44 tons of bombs, aimed at the civil population. These attacks were at the request of General Franco as retribution against the Catalan population. On the night of March 16, 1938 a bomb destroyed the clubhouse on Calle Consell de Cent, trophies, papers, books and souvenirs

1969 – Barcelona and RCD Espanyol play out a 0-0 draw at Sarria in La Liga.

1997 – Amunike scores the only goal of the game against Logroñés, a game where it takes nearly 45 minutes for Barça to register their first shot on target.

2002 – Xavi scores his first goal against Real Madrid in the league as Barça draw 1-1 at the Camp Nou. Zidane the scorer for Madrid.

2014 – Lionel Messi breaks Paulino Alcantara’s record of being the all time top scorer for Barcelona in a 7-0 win over Osasuna.

March 17

1901 – Barcelona win 18-0 away to Tarragona in the Copa Macaya, Barcelona’s biggest win in any competition to date.

1907 – The Campionat de Catalunya ends in a playoff after a controversial refereeing performance in the last game of the season between Barça and X SC, but FCB lose 3-1 in Terrassa.

1913 – The second leg of the Copa del Rey final takes place and ends 0-0 against Real Sociedad. The game will be replayed.

1931 – Arocha scores a hat-trick as Barça draw 4-4 away at Espanyol. Sastre the other scorer.

1938 – The concierge, Josep Cubells, spends the next day recovering everything that can and manages to save part of the archives of the club.

2007 = Gianluca Zambrotta scores his first goal for the club against Recreativo in a 4-0 away win. Eto’o (2) and Messi scored the other goals.

2012 – Lionel Messi becomes the youngest ever player to score 150 goals in the Spanish league as Barça win 2-0 away to Sevilla. Xavi also sets a new personal best with his 13th goal of the season.

2019 – Leo Messi scores a sublime hat-trick in Barcelona’s 4-1 win over Real Betis.

1928 – Barça are beaten 5-4 away at Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey group 3. Piera, Sastre (2), Mas the scorers.

1945 – Barcelona beat Sporting de Gijón 5-2 away in La Liga with goals from Cesar (3), Escola, and Bravo.

1956 – Ramón Alberto Villaverde scores twice in the first 30 minutes to lead Barça to 2-0 win over Real Madrid at Les Corts in the 50th Liga Clásico.

1987 – Dundee United beat Barcelona 2-1 in the UEFA Cup QF, winning 3-1 on aggregate.

1990 – Barcelona plays its last game until 2018 without any homegrown players, a 2-1 away win over Logroñés.

1967 – Josep Fusté scores in the seventh and eighty-ninth minutes to help Barça overcome Real Madrid 2-1 at the Camp Nou.

1986 – Steve Archibald scores to send Barça through in the EC QF at Stadio Comunale against Juve.

2017 – Andre Gomes scores his first Barcelona goal in their 4-2 home win over Valencia in La Liga.

1960 – Second-half goals from Kocsis, Martínez, and Villaverde help Barça to a 3-1 win over Real Madrid at Camp Nou. di Stéfano the scorer for Madrid.

March 23

1902 – Barça beat Catala 15-0 away in their final game of the Copa Macaya, sealing the club’s first title. Winning all eight games, they finish the season with a +58 goal difference, conceding just twice. Gamper (19) and Steinberg (17) finish the top scorers.

1913 – Barça wins its second successive Copa del Rey with a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad in the replay at Camp de la Indústria.

1929 – Tomàs Rosés becomes the 17th president of the club. His spell saw the club win a Catalan Championship and the inaugural La Liga. Future president Josep Sunyol, however, had to diffuse a player rebellion against the directors.

1930 – Two late goals from Bestit and Marti see Barça beat Espanyol 5-4 at Les Corts.

1924 – Alfred Massana dies

1929 – The first match of Tomàs Rosés’ reign as president sees Barça win the derbi against CD Europa 5-2. Goals from Campadabal, Sastre (3) and Parera.

1972 – Christophe Dugarry is born. Made 7 liga appearances for the club from 1997-98.

1985 – Urruti saves a crucial penalty as Barcelona secure the title with a 2-1 win in Valladolid.

1993 – Josep Guardiola scores his first goal for the club in a 3-1 Copa victory versus Valladolid. Laudrup and Salinas the other scorers.

1998 – Xavi makes his Barcelona debut in a 2-1 victory over Lleida in the Copa Catalunya

2016 – Former Barcelona player (1973-78) and coach (1988-96) Johan Cruyff dies aged 68 in Barcelona.

March 25

1928 – 2-2 draw at home with CD Europa in the Copa del Rey Group 3.

1945 – Barça beat Real Madrid 5-0 at Les Corts with goals from Cesar (2), Jose Bravo, Josep Escola, and Maria Gonzalvo.

1981 – Quini is freed. He speaks well of his captors and withdraws charges, but Barça proceed with their claim for compensation after a period which saw the club’s Liga challenge damaged.

March 26

1916 – The first meeting between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey ends in a 2-1 win for Barça. Alcantara, Martinez the scorers. Barça lose the second leg, draw the first replay, and lose the second replay.

1922 – Former Barcelona coach (1961) Enrique Orizaola is born. Enrique Orizaola had a short-lived period as manager, staying at the Club for only five months. He arrived on 12th January 1961 as a replacement for Brocic.

1933 – Barça draw 4-4 with Racing Santander in the final game of the Liga season, finishing in fourth place.

1961 – Two late goals from Luis Suárez and Kubala are not enough to give Barça the win at the Bernabéu, as they lose 3-2 to goals from del Sol, di Stefano, and Puskas.

1962 – Luis López Rekarte is born. Made 59 Liga appearances for the club from 1988-91.

1983 – Juanito puts Real Madrid ahead at the Camp Nou before Maradona equalises just before half-time. Perico Alonso’s 77th minute goal secures a second league victory over Madrid for the season.

1913 – Juan Rocasolano is born.

1929 – Francisco Javier Maristany is born. Made 5 appearances for the club from 1952-55, scoring 1 goal.

1932 – Sígfrid Gràcia is born. Made 229 Liga appearances for the club from 1949-66, scoring 5 goals.

1955 – Barcelona beat Real Valladolid 5-0 at home in La Liga with goals from Suarez (2), Villaverde (2) and Manchon.

1954 – Ground is broken on construction of Camp Nou, the largest public engineering project ever undertaken in city. Move announced in 1950, it took four years for members to raise the funds necessary. Construction took three years and went 336% over budget before being officially opened in September 1957. The first stone was laid on 28 March 1954 and the proposed 66 million peseta project was to be financed entirely by club socios. Designed by local architects J. Soteras Mauri & F. Mitjans Miro, it would feature two huge tiers and a modern cantilevered roof over the west side.
