Marc Cucurella has returned strongly to FC Barcelona’s agenda this summer. According to Simon Johnson, Deco is already in contact with the Chelsea full-back’s entourage. Hansi Flick also admires the player and would welcome his possible arrival.
The operation is not closed yet, but the context is starting to move in London. Cucurella would be open to leaving Chelsea if an important proposal appears. The English club, for their part, would not close the door to a sale if the price matches their valuation.
Barça are not alone in this race, because Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid are also interested. That competition turns the operation into a much more demanding battle for Deco. Atlético, in particular, appear especially attentive to an opportunity they have been following for some time.
Flick wants more quality at the back
Cucurella fits because of his intensity, experience, aggression and knowledge of Spanish football. He is a left-back, can play as a wing-back and can also interpret more interior positions in build-up. That profile appeals to Flick, who wants a stronger and more competitive defence.
Barça already have Alejandro Balde as the starting left-back of the project. However, the season has shown that the team need more reliable alternatives in defensive areas. Cucurella would bring range, experience and an intensity that could be very useful in Europe.
The player also knows the blaugrana environment perfectly because of his past at La Masia. He did not establish himself in the first team, but he was developed within Barça’s ecosystem. That link gives a possible return an important emotional reading too.
Chelsea would listen to offers
Chelsea have no absolute need to sell Cucurella this summer. The full-back has a contract until 2028, which gives the London club strength in any negotiation. Even so, several reports suggest the Blues would be willing to talk if a good offer arrives.
The Athletic, through Simon Johnson, places the player in a position where he is exploring options to leave. It also states that Chelsea would not block an operation if the price fits their valuation. That detail opens the door for Spanish clubs to start moving.
The question will be the final cost, because Cucurella would not arrive for free or for a low fee. Chelsea paid a lot of money for him in 2022 and will want to recover an important part of that investment. Barça would therefore need sales or financial margin before launching a real offensive.
Atlético and Madrid also push
Atlético Madrid appear as one of the most serious rivals in this operation. At the Metropolitano, they want to strengthen the left-back position and Cucurella fits because of his competitive character. Mateu Alemany also knows the Spanish market well and has reportedly already moved some contacts.
Real Madrid also appear among the clubs that appreciate the footballer, although their situation is different. The white club have other defensive priorities and do not look like the most advanced candidate right now. Even so, their presence forces Barça to monitor every movement.
For Cucurella, returning to LaLiga would be an attractive option after several years in England. Barcelona, Madrid and Atlético offer major projects, visibility and top-level European competition. The final decision will depend on role, financial proposal and the player’s family preference.
Deco must measure the timing
Barça cannot attack every open operation without first organising several important exits. João Cancelo’s continuity, Balde’s future and possible defensive movements all condition this file. If nobody leaves at the back, signing Cucurella would become much more complicated.
Even so, Deco does not want to stay out if a real opportunity opens during the market. Flick values the player and his entourage already knows about Barça’s interest. That allows the club to be well positioned if Chelsea lower their demands or the player pushes.
The Cucurella case is still far from being resolved, but it has already entered an active monitoring phase. The player wants to study an exit, Chelsea would listen to offers and Barça have already contacted his entourage. And that is the twist: Flick wants more muscle at the back, but Madrid and Atlético want him too.
Caution note: This situation is based on reports from Simon Johnson, The Athletic and current market information. At the time of writing, there is no official agreement between FC Barcelona, Chelsea or Marc Cucurella.
