FC Barcelona continues working on a series of strategic contract renewals designed to improve the club’s financial stability. Just days after La Liga confirmed an increase in Barcelona’s salary cap — rising from €351.2 million to €432.8 million — the sporting department has begun activating new internal operations.
One of the players now involved in those plans is Andreas Christensen. According to Sport, sporting director Deco held a meeting in Barcelona with Simon Oliveira, the defender’s representative from the agency KIN Partners.
A renewal with financial and sporting logic
The potential renewal has a double strategic purpose for Barcelona. On the financial side, extending the contract would allow the club to redistribute the player’s salary across more years, helping reduce immediate wage pressure and improving compliance with financial fair play regulations.
On the sporting side, the coaching staff continues to trust Christensen’s quality when he is available.
Although injuries have limited his continuity over the past two seasons, the Danish defender has consistently delivered solid performances when fit. His defensive reliability and ability to build play from the back remain highly valued by the technical staff led by Hansi Flick.
This type of renewal could allow the club to stabilize its financial structure without having to sell an important player.
A defender with recurring injury problems
Since arriving at Barcelona, Christensen has shown he can offer immediate defensive reliability. However, injuries have repeatedly interrupted his rhythm.
With the exception of the 2022–23 season — when he played a key role in the team coached by Xavi Hernández — the defender has faced several physical setbacks.
Over the last two years he has dealt with problems involving his Achilles tendon, back issues, hamstring injuries and most recently a knee problem.
These setbacks have limited his consistency but have not changed the positive evaluation of his performances when available.
A player the club still values
During the previous summer transfer window, Barcelona briefly considered the possibility of selling Christensen due to the club’s financial situation. However, the defender himself never wanted to leave and the coaching staff did not push for his departure.
At that time, Deco warned that one central defender could leave the squad. Ultimately, the unexpected exit was Iñigo Martínez rather than Christensen.
Now, with the Danish defender recovering from injury, the club has once again opened discussions about extending his stay.
For the moment, no final agreement has been reached. The meeting between Deco and the player’s agent was only an initial contact designed to understand Christensen’s intentions.
But the message from the club is already clear: Barcelona are open to offering the defender a new deal and keeping him at the Spotify Camp Nou beyond his current contract.
