The future of the full-back position is once again becoming a major talking point at Barcelona just as the market begins to heat up. There is one name on the table that the coaching staff rate very highly and who has already shown that he can perform at a strong level. Even so, the operation is far from simple for one very specific reason.
The player has left a strong impression during his recent spell and has delivered in different situations. His ability to adapt to both flanks has been crucial in difficult moments of the season. But that alone is not enough to guarantee his automatic continuity in the squad.
Inside the sporting department, there is broad agreement that his profile fits the system perfectly. Even so, the club do not want to repeat mistakes from the past or put their financial situation at risk. That is exactly where the real obstacle begins.

Flick wants him, but Barça have drawn the line
From a sporting point of view, there is no real debate inside the club. Hansi Flick sees the full-back as a very useful piece because of his versatility. On top of that, his experience in major matches gives him an added value that is not easy to find on the market.
The German coach has already given the green light to his continuity for next season. He believes the player could be important both in the starting eleven and in the wider rotation. Especially in a long campaign where injuries may once again make a huge difference.
But Barcelona are not operating only on sporting criteria in this case. The financial situation still shapes every important decision in squad planning. That is why the people in the offices have already set a limit that will not be crossed under any circumstance.
There is only one possible way to complete the deal
The club’s position is clear and fully defined. Barça are not willing to pay a transfer fee for the player under any circumstances this summer. That immediately rules out any negotiation based on the figures currently being mentioned.
The only formula Barcelona are willing to consider is a free arrival. In other words, the player would first need to end his relationship with his current club and become available at zero cost. Without that step, the operation is considered completely dead from the start.
There are no intermediate formulas being considered either. No delayed payments, no softened structure and no creative compromise to try to unblock the situation. The club’s financial priority is focused on other strategic areas of the squad, and that reduces the room for movement even more in this case.
The sacrifice that will decide his future
From this point on, the responsibility falls directly on the footballer. If he wants to continue at Barça, he will need to make important decisions away from the pitch. Above all, those decisions concern his current contract and his financial conditions.
The first step would be to negotiate his exit from the club that currently owns him. That is not always an easy process and depends on several factors, including the willingness of both sides to reach a final agreement.
The second step would be to accept a major salary reduction in order to fit into Barça’s structure. His current financial terms are far beyond what the club can take on right now. That adjustment will be absolutely essential if the move is to have any real chance.
Barça are not waiting and are already studying alternatives
At the same time, Barcelona do not want to remain blocked while waiting for one player’s decision. Even though the full-back remains a priority for the coaching staff, the sporting department are already working on alternative options. The goal is to avoid losing time if the operation eventually proves impossible.
The market offers several interesting profiles, and some names have already started gaining strength. The idea is to find an option that fits both the sporting demands and the financial limits of the club. In the current context, that is not always easy.
That is why, even if Flick’s position is already clear, the final decision will depend on one very specific condition. Everything comes down to a scenario Barcelona see as completely non-negotiable.
