FC Barcelona will travel to Balaídos this Sunday with a clear goal: to recover their best form and restore confidence after a stretch of matches that has left mixed feelings among fans. The challenge, however, is far from simple. Balaídos has been one of the most uncomfortable stadiums for the Catalans in the last decade. Since 2015, Barça has only managed to win twice in their last nine league visits to Celta. The other seven ended in disappointment, with four victories for the Galician side and three draws.
Balaídos, a Stadium of Strange Endings
Recent encounters between Celta and Barça have been filled with suspense and late drama. For Barcelona, the endings in Vigo often turn into heartbreak, even in matches they seemed to have under control. The most recent example came last season, on November 23, 2024. With Hansi Flick already on the bench, Barça let a 0–2 lead slip away in the final minutes. Goals from Raphinha and Lewandowski seemed to seal the victory, but after Marc Casadó’s red card in the 82nd minute, everything collapsed. A mistake by Jules Koundé opened the door for Alfon González to score in the 84th minute, and just two minutes later, Hugo Álvarez made it 2–2.
That match was not an isolated case. In the 2021–22 season, Barça once again let a three-goal advantage disappear. Ansu Fati, Sergio Busquets, and Memphis Depay had built a 0–3 lead, but Nolito and Iago Aspas, with two late goals including one in the 95th minute, completed an incredible 3–3 draw.
The trend began back on September 23, 2015, when Celta stunned Barcelona with a 4–1 victory. As on many occasions, Iago Aspas was decisive. Against Barça, the Galician forward has scored 11 goals in 20 matches and contributed to 15 in total. He remains a constant threat whenever the two teams meet.
Celta in Their Best Moment of the Season
The historical challenge is now combined with a dangerous present. Claudio Giráldez’s Celta arrives in top form, riding a five-match winning streak in all competitions. Their recent victories against Dinamo Zagreb, Nice, Osasuna, Levante, and Puerto de la Vega have lifted team morale to the highest level of the season.
After the win in Croatia, Giráldez sent a clear message: “Now we focus on our most important competition, La Liga, and on facing Barcelona.” His words reflect the ambition of a team that feels capable of surprising anyone right now.
Ilaix Moriba’s Revival and His Message to Barça
One of the names attracting the most attention ahead of the match is Ilaix Moriba. The midfielder is going through his best moment since leaving Barcelona in 2021. Against Levante, he was decisive, forcing the red card of Unai Vencedor and helping his team secure the victory. With 709 minutes played in La Liga, Ilaix is now the second most-used outfield player by Giráldez, only behind Sergio Carreira.
His story is one of redemption. The Celta midfielder admitted in February that leaving Barcelona was a mistake. “I made the wrong decision. I was very young and felt a lot of pressure,” he confessed. Encouraged by Iago Aspas and Giráldez, he agreed to lower his salary to continue in Vigo permanently after Celta paid six million euros to RB Leipzig to make his move official.
Laporta and Koeman had both warned him years ago. The president said, “We cannot allow him to leave for free,” while Koeman added, “Money is not the most important thing, playing matches is.” Ilaix seems to have taken those words to heart. After difficult spells at Leipzig, Valencia, and Getafe, he has finally found stability and happiness in Galicia.
Now, at 22 years old, he is showing again the explosive box-to-box style that made him a La Masia prodigy. He still lacks consistency in front of goal, but his energy, power, and technique have turned him into a key figure for Celta.
Four Former Barça Players Lead the Galician Charge
Ilaix is not the only former Barcelona player shining in Vigo. Òscar Mingueza has rediscovered his form and recently contributed with a goal and an assist against Levante. Ferran Jutglà, another ex-Blaugrana, scored a brace in Pamplona, while Marcos Alonso has recovered from injury to anchor the defense, even though he missed the trip to Zagreb due to illness.
With so many familiar faces and a confident home crowd, Celta feels ready to make life difficult for Flick’s team once again.
A Match to Test Barcelona’s Character
For Barça, this visit to Balaídos comes at a decisive point in the season. The team needs to win not only to stay close to the top of La Liga but also to recover the positive feelings that have faded in recent weeks. Flick is aware that the team must improve its defensive concentration and game management, especially in away matches.
History and statistics say that Vigo is a dangerous place for Barcelona. Yet, it is also the perfect opportunity to show character and resilience. To win at Balaídos would mean more than three points. It would mean breaking a long curse and regaining confidence at a crucial moment in the season.
