Barcelona’s attempt to get closer to Julián Álvarez has run into an unexpected obstacle this week. According to Pedro Fullana on Cadena SER, the initial plan included money plus Ferran Torres. The Valencian forward, however, does not want to be part of that operation with Atlético Madrid.
That refusal changes the economic formula Barça had imagined to reduce the cost of an extremely difficult signing. Fullana explained that, without Ferran, the route would basically be reduced to a very difficult cash offer. That scenario is especially complex because Miguel Ángel Gil Marín is demanding a huge fee.
Cadena SER adds that Atlético sense external movement around Julián Álvarez’s future. PSG and Arsenal have also reportedly asked through authorised intermediaries. That context explains why Barça are not alone in a race that is still at an early stage.

The target that defines the summer
Barça’s interest is easier to understand after the already announced exit of Robert Lewandowski this summer. The club officially confirmed that the Pole will close his chapter after four full seasons. That forces Deco to study a differential striker without breaking an already delicate economic plan.
Julián fits because of his age, mobility, high pressing and ability to adapt to several attacking contexts. Atlético announced his signing in 2024 and tied the Argentine down until June 2030. That long contract gives the Madrid club a very strong negotiating position.
Back in February, Cadena SER already explained that Atlético were asking for figures impossible for the current Barça. The outlet placed his clause close to €500 million and mentioned huge informal demands. It also warned that Gil Marín viewed the striker as an almost untouchable Atlético flagship.
Ferran blocks the exchange
Including Ferran could have reduced the cost and made Barça’s negotiation more breathable. But the player’s will matters a lot, because no exchange advances without prior personal approval. Cadena SER says Ferran does not want to enter, leaving Barça without that key lever.
The attacker has an official contract with Barça until June 30, 2027. The club also announced a very high release clause when he arrived from Manchester City. That detail strengthens his room to decide without feeling forced into an unwanted exit.
Ferran also remains useful in a squad that must rebuild its attack. His continuity still makes sense while the club decides how to replace Lewandowski definitively. That is why turning him into a bargaining chip was never a simple decision for Deco.

Atlético control the operation
Atlético, meanwhile, hold all the power in any conversation for Julián. Miguel Martín Talavera recalled on Cadena SER that selling him would be the club’s own decision. The €500 million clause blocks any scenario of immediate contractual pressure.
The possible lower investment from Apollo, according to Cadena SER, could change some internal reflections at Atlético. If Julián left, the club would have money to reinforce several priority positions this summer. Even so, Fullana insists that Gil Marín will not give the Argentine away.
The scenario leaves Barça facing an attractive operation, but one still full of major blocks. Without Ferran, the signing would require a direct investment that currently looks very difficult for Barcelona. And there lies the twist: Julián is highly liked, but Ferran does not want to move from Barça.
Caution note: this situation is based on Cadena SER’s reported information and market context, not an official offer or completed negotiation between Barcelona and Atlético Madrid.
