FC Barcelona continue to organise a goalkeeping department that could move again this summer. Álex Remiro has become the favourite to arrive at the blaugrana club. The idea would be to sign him as a reliable alternative to Joan García.
Barça are not looking for an undisputed starter, because Joan García begins as the main bet of the project. His performances have convinced the club and the sporting department want to protect that hierarchy next season. That is why Remiro appears as an ideal profile: experienced, reliable and already familiar with La Liga.
The operation is not closed yet, but the scenario is starting to make sporting sense. Remiro would be willing to accept a secondary role if he joins a winning project. The possibility of playing in the Copa del Rey and competing for occasional minutes is attractive to him.
Joan García shapes the plan
The great certainty in Barça’s goalkeeping department is Joan García, signed as a strategic bet. Barça paid his release clause and brought him in with the idea of building the future from the back. His season has strengthened the feeling that he can be the team’s main goalkeeper.
However, a squad competing for everything needs much more than one strong starter. Injuries, suspensions, rotations and Copa matches all require a very reliable backup. That is where Remiro could offer an immediate and high-level solution.
The Real Sociedad goalkeeper has experience in the First Division, international presence and competitive leadership. He would not arrive as a prospect, but as a goalkeeper used to top-level demands. That maturity fits what Hansi Flick needs to fully protect the position.
Remiro accepts the challenge
The big advantage for Barça is the player’s own willingness. According to Fichajes.net, Remiro knows that his role would mainly be as Joan’s backup. Even so, the chance to wear blaugrana attracts him because of the club’s sporting and competitive dimension.
Real Sociedad will not make an exit easy if they still consider him an important player. Football España previously reported that the Basque club wanted to protect his continuity before the market. Remiro, for his part, was not in a hurry to decide his future before the end of the season.
His contract with Real Sociedad runs until 2027, an important detail for negotiations. If he does not renew, the Basque club could be forced to study offers this summer. That would allow Barça to attempt a more controlled operation than other goalkeeper targets.
A goalkeeping department full of files
The interest in Remiro also makes sense because of the wider context around Barça’s goalkeeping situation. Marc-André ter Stegen remains an unresolved file, with a high salary and a future still to be clarified. Iñaki Peña has also been linked with exit scenarios in recent months.
AS recently described Barça’s 2026-27 goalkeeping department as a position full of doubts. The only certainty was Joan García, while everything else depended on the market, contracts and internal decisions. That explains why Deco wants alternatives before pre-season begins.
Remiro would allow Barça to create a very clear structure: Joan as starter and himself as a solid backup. That distribution would avoid improvisation and give the coaching staff security throughout the campaign. It would also allow the club to manage Copa matches without lowering the competitive level too much.
An operation that makes sense
Barça do not need to spend a fortune on a second goalkeeper this summer. That is why Remiro would only make sense if Real Sociedad accept a reasonable negotiation. The priority will remain strengthening other areas, especially attack, defence and midfield.
From a sporting perspective, the fit looks quite clear because of his style and La Liga experience. Remiro has good footwork, reflexes, personality and command inside the box. Flick values that kind of security to sustain a season full of important matches.
The outcome will depend on the price, Real Sociedad’s stance and the movements of other goalkeepers. Barça already have Joan as their reference, but they want to protect themselves with a reliable name. And that is the twist: Remiro would not arrive to take the job from Joan García, but to secure it.
Caution note: This article is based on reports from Fichajes.net, Football España, AS and current market speculation. At the time of writing, there is no official agreement between FC Barcelona, Real Sociedad and Álex Remiro.
