FC Barcelona has already started planning next season despite the ongoing electoral process at the club. Inside the offices of the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, the sporting department continues analysing potential signings to reinforce the squad managed by Hansi Flick.
One of the names currently appearing on the shortlist is Nathan Aké, the Dutch defender who currently plays for Manchester City.
According to the program Barça Reservat on 3Cat, the player is highly appreciated by sporting director Deco, who is looking for a left-footed defender capable of fitting the team’s playing style.
A versatile defender who fits Flick’s profile
Aké is 31 years old and currently under contract with Manchester City until 2027. Despite that long-term deal, Barcelona believe the defender could become an interesting market opportunity.
The Dutch international offers valuable versatility. He can operate both as a left-sided centre-back and as a left-back, a quality that is particularly appreciated by Barcelona’s coaching staff.
At Manchester City, the competition in defense is extremely strong. Players such as Joško Gvardiol, Rúben Dias, Marc Guéhi and Abdukodir Khusanov provide several high-level options in Guardiola’s defensive rotation.
That depth could potentially open the door for Aké to consider a move if the right offer arrives.
Barça believe he could leave for a reasonable price
Inside Barcelona there is a belief that Manchester City might be willing to negotiate if the defender is not considered a central piece of Pep Guardiola’s long-term plans.
This season, Aké has had fewer minutes than usual. The Dutch defender has played 1,129 minutes across 24 matches, starting only 12 of them, many in secondary competitions such as the EFL Cup.
Because of that reduced role, Barça believe the operation could potentially be completed for a relatively affordable fee.
A name that already appeared in winter
Barcelona’s interest in Aké is not entirely new. The club already evaluated the possibility of signing him during the winter transfer window when Andreas Christensen suffered a long-term injury.
In the end, the sporting department chose to reinforce a different position and secured the loan signing of João Cancelo instead — a move that has become increasingly important for the team.
Even so, Deco has not removed Aké’s name from the list of potential defensive reinforcements as Barcelona continues preparing for next season.
