João Cancelo is fully focused on continuing at FC Barcelona and is already acting accordingly. The Portuguese full-back has no intention of returning to Saudi Arabia once the current season ends. His goal is clear: stay at Camp Nou and establish himself under Hansi Flick.
Inside the club, there is strong alignment with that vision. His continuity is seen as a key priority for the summer, especially because Barça need stability and reliability in a position that has been inconsistent throughout the season.
The issue is not desire — from either side. The real obstacle is financial, once again shaped by Financial Fair Play restrictions. And that’s where Deco must find a precise solution.

Cancelo wants to stay — and is willing to sacrifice
The player’s stance is firm and has only strengthened recently. Cancelo is willing to reduce his salary to remain at Barça, a gesture that significantly helps negotiations. However, it does not fully solve the situation.
He is under contract until 2027, meaning his future does not depend solely on his own decision. His current loan deal does not include a fixed purchase option, forcing Barça to negotiate directly with his parent club.
That makes this a complex operation requiring patience and careful timing. It won’t be automatic, even if all parties are aligned. The key will be reaching an affordable agreement without stretching the club’s finances.
Flick values his versatility and experience
Within the coaching staff, Cancelo is highly appreciated for what he brings. Experience, personality, and the ability to play on both flanks make him extremely valuable in Flick’s system.
The German coach wants full-backs who do more than just run — players who understand the game, build from the back, and contribute in attack. Cancelo fits that profile perfectly. Even if he hasn’t always been flawless defensively, his overall impact remains very positive.
There is also a strategic aspect. Barça do not want to open another major issue in a position that already lacks stability. If Cancelo leaves, the club would need to enter the market again, and finding a player of his level and profile would not be easy.
Deco aims for a low-cost deal
The plan inside the club is clear. Barça want to sign him permanently, but only under financially sustainable conditions. There will be no excessive spending in such a delicate economic context.
After the Champions League setback, the club understands the need for reliable, ready-made solutions, and Cancelo represents exactly that. He is a known quantity, proven, and capable of contributing immediately.
Right now, all signs point in one direction. Cancelo wants to stay, Barça consider him a priority, and both sides are working toward a viable deal.
If Deco manages to close a cost-effective agreement, the Portuguese full-back will continue wearing the blaugrana shirt next season.
