According to @moillorens@samuelmarsden, Barcelona have started talks with Ousmane Dembele over a new contract, sources have told ESPN, with the forward’s existing deal set to expire in 2022. Barça are aware that Manchester United are still monitoring Dembélé’s situation but that the Blaugrana are confident of getting him to commit to a new long-term deal. Negotiations have been ongoing now for several weeks.
United tried to sign Dembele in the summer on loan contract with an option to buy. However he didn’t want to move, despite Barça’s openness to letting him leave at the time, because he is desperate to succeed at the Camp Nou.
Barça’s transfer business is on hold until January 24, when a new president will be elected. A managing committee has been overseeing the day-to-day running of the club since Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned in October.
It will then be up to the incoming president to give the green light to any signings or contract extensions Planes and his team, who are working closely with coach Ronald Koeman, have put in place.
@HelenaCondis also said on @Gol that Ousmane Dembélé has NOT decided to renew his contract as of yet. He will wait for the new president.
Dembele is enjoying a good season so far, and it’s finally seems like he’s catching his rhythm. In his Press Conference today, Koeman said: “I’m satisfied with Dembélé’s performances. The first thing that changed is that he improved his physicality. In order for a player to perform well, he must be in a good shape. Little by little, he gains confidence. You notice he’s happy recently.”
