Baba Kourouma, one of the most promising talents emerging from FC Barcelona’s academy, is now closer than ever to taking a significant step in his career. The club has officially informed the young central defender, still only 16 years old, of their intention to offer him a place in the Juvenil A team, solidifying his development. This decision comes after Kourouma has regularly competed at higher levels than his age group.
Born in Guinea and part of La Masia since 2021, Kourouma has gained ground in Barça’s youth teams due to his physicality, left-footed technique, and game intelligence. His progression has been remarkable, and last season he was already called up to play for Juvenil A, making appearances in elite youth competitions like the UEFA Youth League.
Recognition for an outstanding season
The offer for a spot in the Juvenil A team is a clear sign of recognition from the club’s sporting management. Barça sees his performance as being at the highest youth level, justifying his move to a more advanced category. This gesture also responds to the club’s need to strengthen the center of the defense with left-footed profiles, which are highly valued in the club’s playing philosophy.
The decision came after a formal conversation between the club and Kourouma’s family, where the club officially communicated its intention to firmly place him in the Juvenil A team. This confirms the internal valuation of his season and long-term potential.
From pivot to defensive centerpiece
In his early days at La Masia, Kourouma played as a pivot or central midfielder due to his technical quality and vision with the ball. Over time, his physical development and football intelligence led him to establish himself as a central defender, where he has shown consistency and leadership, even when required to play as a full-back in specific situations.
His left foot is one of his key strengths, allowing him to build play from the back, break lines with diagonal passes, and even shoot from distance when the situation allows. This versatility has also allowed him to play in midfield at lower levels, explaining in part his swift adaptation to Juvenil A, well ahead of what would be expected for his age.
Projection and future at Barça
In recent months, Kourouma has stood out not only for his performance in youth league play but also for his ability to adapt to different tactical demands within Barça’s playing system. His physical attributes, combined with his technique and vision, make him one of the most interesting defensive prospects from La Masia in recent years.
Despite his young age, he has already trained with higher-level teams and has been closely monitored by the youth football coordinators. His projection has led many within the club to believe that, if he continues his progress, he could soon move up to Barça Atlètic and even get closer to the first team in the not-so-distant future.
The Juvenil A spot offer is just one more step in a journey that has only just begun. At La Masia, there is confidence that Baba Kourouma will continue to take steady steps towards becoming a global footballing elite.
