Marc Cucurella has once again emerged strongly on FC Barcelona’s agenda this summer. The Chelsea full-back is highly rated by Hansi Flick because of his intensity, experience and competitive character. However, his return to Camp Nou depends on a painful decision inside the club.
Barça cannot carry two major investments for the same position without altering the squad balance. That is why the operation would only make sense if an important departure happens first. And the name at the centre of the entire scenario is Alejandro Balde.
The Barça academy product still has status, a long contract and significant value in the European market. But his season has left some internal doubts and the club need to generate room to sign. In that context, his departure could unlock a deal that has been gaining strength for days.
Cucurella waits for an opportunity
Cucurella would welcome a return to Spain after several years in the Premier League. His spell at Chelsea has helped him grow, mature and compete under major pressure. Now, a Barça return would carry both sporting and emotional weight.
The full-back developed at La Masia, although he never managed to establish himself in the first team. Since then, he has built a very solid career at Getafe, Brighton and Chelsea. That evolution now makes him much more prepared for a major challenge.
Flick especially values his aggression, energy and ability to sustain high rhythms. He is also liked because he can play as a left-back and adapt to more physical contexts. For a squad that wants to compete in Europe, that profile is very attractive.
Balde holds the key
The key to the operation is directly connected to Alejandro Balde’s future. Barça do not plan to sign Cucurella without freeing sporting space at left-back. That is why selling the academy player could become the necessary first step.
Balde still has a strong market, especially in the Premier League, where he has been admired for some time. His pace, youth and room for growth remain very powerful arguments. A big offer would allow Barça to finance part of the signing and create salary margin.
Even so, the situation is not simple because Balde means a lot to the club. He is homegrown, has potential and could still recover a highly differential version. But Barça need to make cold decisions in a summer shaped by financial limits.
Chelsea will not give him away
Chelsea have no intention of letting Cucurella leave cheaply this summer. In England, there is talk of a high valuation, between €50 million and €70 million depending on different reports. That figure forces Barça to sell before thinking about a real offensive.
The London club know the player has recovered prestige and still has important suitors. Alongside Barça, Atlético Madrid are also monitoring his situation. That competition could raise the price and reduce Barça’s room for manoeuvre.
For Deco, the operation would only make sense with a very well-worked financial structure. It is not enough for Cucurella to want a return or for Flick to value him highly. First, Barça need space, money and an exit that justifies the entire move.
A difficult decision for Deco
The case perfectly reflects Barça’s current market: sporting ambition and financial limits. Flick wants a more competitive squad, but Deco must balance the numbers before acting. Every important signing needs a sale, a loan or some financial engineering first.
Cucurella would bring immediate performance, international experience and a very useful character for big matches. Balde, on the other hand, represents youth, future and a homegrown bet. Choosing between them would not be simple or purely sporting.
Barça must decide whether they prefer patience with Balde or immediate impact with Cucurella. The market could push the club towards a decision that looked unthinkable only months ago. And that is the twist: for Cucurella to return, Balde could be the sacrifice.
Caution note: This article is based on reports from The Athletic, Barça Blaugranes and current market speculation. At the time of writing, there is no official agreement between FC Barcelona, Chelsea and Marc Cucurella, nor any confirmed decision regarding Alejandro Balde’s future.
