FC Barcelona have already set in motion one of the key moves of the upcoming transfer window. The club want to sign a centre-back this summer and, internally, three names stand out above the rest. The priority is very clear: a left-footed defender with strong ball distribution, authority and the ability to perform immediately in Hansi Flick’s system.
This need is not new, but it now feels more obvious than ever. Barça want to take a definitive step forward defensively if they are going to compete at the highest level in Europe, and inside the club there is a feeling that the back line still lacks a true leader in the centre of defence.
The economic context only increases the pressure to get the decision right. There will be very little room for error in a signing that could shape the future of the defence for years. Barcelona are not looking for a long-term project in this case. They want a safe bet, someone ready to arrive and raise the level immediately.
That is where three names come into focus inside the Camp Nou offices. Three different profiles, but all with one common point: each of them could become the new leader of Barça’s defence.
Bastoni is Laporta’s dream target
The name at the top of the list is Alessandro Bastoni. The Inter defender is hugely admired inside the club and is seen as the ideal signing to take command of the back line. His profile fits what Flick wants almost perfectly: clean build-up play, personality and the ability to handle high-pressure situations.
At Barcelona, there is a belief that his arrival would bring an immediate jump in both quality and authority. On top of that, the Italian is in the middle of his footballing prime and looks ready to take on a central role in a major project.
The main problem is obvious: the price. Inter have no intention of making his departure easy, and any move would require a major financial effort, as well as competition with other top European clubs.
Even so, Barça have not ruled him out. He is the number one objective, and the one who would most clearly change the level of the defence.

Schlotterbeck and Pau Torres are the real alternatives
If the Bastoni operation becomes too complicated, Barcelona have two highly valued alternatives. The first is Nico Schlotterbeck, the Borussia Dortmund centre-back, who stands out for his aggression, anticipation and his left-footed distribution from the back.
He is a profile that would strongly appeal to Flick, but his signing would not be easy either. The Premier League is also pushing hard for him, and Dortmund are not known for negotiating cheaply when it comes to important players.
The other option is Pau Torres, now at Aston Villa. He is a name that has been on Barça’s radar for a long time and has always been appreciated because of how naturally he fits into Spanish football.
His experience, his reading of the game and his ability to adapt to Barça’s style all work strongly in his favour. In addition, his time in the Premier League has given him a more physical edge, which had previously been one of the doubts around him.
Flick wants a leader now, not a future prospect
The final decision will not be shaped only by money, but by what Flick wants from a sporting point of view. The German coach is looking for a centre-back who can compete from day one and elevate the level of the entire defensive structure.
He sees it as essential to have a player who can organise the line, stay reliable in big matches and help the team survive moments of maximum pressure.
That is why Barça are not prioritising a young defender who still needs years of development. They want a finished footballer, someone who can come in and either start immediately or push to become a starter without needing a long adaptation period.
The market will ultimately decide which path becomes possible, but the idea inside the club is already very clear. Barcelona are going to sign a centre-back this summer. And from Bastoni, Schlotterbeck and Pau Torres, the player chosen to lead Flick’s new defence is expected to emerge.
