Marc-André ter Stegen has once again emerged as one of the biggest storylines of Barcelona’s summer. The German goalkeeper still has a long-term contract, a significant salary and an increasingly complicated sporting situation. As a result, his future could have a major impact on the club’s plans for the coming months.
The key issue is not simply finding him a new destination. A loan move would do little if Barça continued paying a large portion of his wages. A permanent transfer, however, could free up a substantial amount of salary space and create room for other operations.
That is why the club views his situation as one of the most important files of the summer. Solving it would not only reshape the goalkeeping department, but also improve Barcelona’s financial flexibility. In the current context, every major salary matters.
A departure with huge consequences
Ter Stegen signed a contract extension until 2028, a decision that now complicates any potential negotiation. At the time, Barcelona considered him one of the pillars of the project. Today, the circumstances look very different.
The German spent last season on loan at Girona in search of regular playing time. That move eased a difficult sporting situation, but it did not fully solve the underlying problem. Barça still carried a significant part of his salary burden.
That is why there is a major difference between another temporary move and a definitive exit. A new loan would provide only limited relief. A permanent transfer would create a much greater impact on the club’s wage bill.
Financial Fair Play changes everything
Barcelona have improved their financial position, but significant work remains to be done. The club still needs departures and salary reductions to register future signings comfortably. In that context, Ter Stegen’s situation becomes especially important.
His contract belongs to one of the higher salary brackets within the squad. Removing that salary completely would immediately improve Barça’s Financial Fair Play position. It would also give Deco more freedom to work on other priority targets.
The club wants to strengthen several areas of the squad while maintaining financial balance. To achieve that, Barcelona need both transfer income and meaningful wage reductions. Ter Stegen’s departure could help deliver exactly that.
A sporting problem as well
The goalkeeper’s situation is not only financial. Barça have already reshaped their plans between the posts and Ter Stegen no longer appears to have a clear path forward. Returning without a defined role would create another uncomfortable situation for both Hansi Flick and the player.
The German also needs regular minutes to maintain his status at international level. With the World Cup approaching, every top goalkeeper wants certainty regarding playing time. Sitting on the bench would not benefit anyone involved.
Finding a solution is not easy, however. His contract length and salary make the operation difficult for many clubs. Barcelona therefore need a serious and sustainable solution rather than a short-term fix.
The market will decide
Barcelona’s priority would be to find a club willing to complete a permanent transfer. That outcome would free salary space, close a difficult chapter and bring clarity to the goalkeeping situation. It would also allow Deco to focus on other areas of the squad.
If that option does not materialise, the club may once again have to explore intermediate solutions. A loan with shared wages would provide some relief, but it would not transform the financial picture. Internally, a definitive exit is considered far more valuable.
The coming weeks will determine whether Ter Stegen is ready to begin a new chapter away from Camp Nou. Barça need flexibility, Flick needs clarity and the goalkeeper needs regular football. And that is the twist: his departure would not only solve a problem, it could also unlock Barcelona’s summer market.
Caution note: This report is based on media speculation and commentary regarding Barcelona’s financial situation. There is currently no official confirmation from the club that Ter Stegen is for sale or that a permanent transfer is being actively negotiated.
