Marc-André ter Stegen is again facing a delicate situation at FC Barcelona. The German goalkeeper no longer has a guaranteed leading role in the new project. And now, according to Fichajes.net, Real Sociedad appear as a possible LaLiga destination.
The scenario is directly linked to the future of Álex Remiro, who Barça like. If the Real Sociedad goalkeeper ends up moving to the Camp Nou, Anoeta will need a replacement. In that context, Ter Stegen emerges as an experienced and high-level option.
However, the operation would not be easy because of the German’s salary. Ter Stegen still has one of the highest wages in Barça’s squad. To play at Anoeta, he would need to accept a major reduction.
Real Sociedad need a reliable goalkeeper
Real Sociedad cannot leave their goal uncovered if Remiro leaves this summer. The Spanish goalkeeper has been a key piece in recent seasons. His departure would force the Basque club to react quickly.
Ter Stegen would fit because of experience, leadership and deep LaLiga knowledge. He would not need time to adapt to the league. From day one, he could assume a major role in San Sebastián.
The German would also have an advantage over destinations outside Spain. He could remain in a familiar league, language and competitive environment. That detail may matter at this stage of his career.
The salary blocks everything
The main obstacle remains Ter Stegen’s salary at Barcelona. According to Fichajes.net, he earns between €13 million and €15 million per season. That figure is far beyond what Real Sociedad can currently assume.
The Basque club would need to find a balanced formula for the deal. They could offer him minutes, leadership and a serious sporting project. But matching his Barça salary seems almost impossible right now.
That is why the player’s will would be absolutely decisive. Ter Stegen must choose between money, minutes and continuity in LaLiga. At Barça, his role could shrink if Joan García becomes the starter.
Baumann also appears
Real Sociedad are not working on just one goalkeeper option this summer. Fichajes.net also places Oliver Baumann on the club’s radar. His Bundesliga experience and German profile could fit the new plan.
Baumann may be more realistic from an economic point of view. Ter Stegen, however, would have a much bigger sporting and media impact. That difference explains why his name is attracting attention around Anoeta.
The final decision will depend on price, salary and physical guarantees. Real Sociedad want a reliable goalkeeper for the entire season. That is why every move will be analysed with real caution.
Barça want salary space
For Barça, a Ter Stegen exit would have major financial importance. The club would remove one of the highest wages from the squad. That margin would help Deco with registrations, signings and pending exits.
The blaugrana goalkeeping department is already changing deeply this summer. Joan García appears as a present and future reference. The Remiro option would reinforce the idea of starting another era.
Barça do not want to give Ter Stegen away this summer. But they know his salary carries enormous weight in their planning. If a competitive destination appears, his exit could start making sense.
Anoeta may open the door
Ter Stegen still has the level to compete at a strong club. What he needs is a context where he can feel important again. Real Sociedad could offer minutes, leadership and a serious LaLiga project.
Ajax had also appeared as a possible destination in recent weeks. But the salary problem made that route extremely complicated. Staying in Spain could be much more attractive for the German goalkeeper.
The goalkeeper market may create a domino effect in the coming weeks. Remiro could move closer to Barça, and Real Sociedad would need action. And there is the twist: if Remiro leaves, Anoeta could open the door for Ter Stegen.
Caution note: At the time of writing, there is no official agreement for Ter Stegen. The operation remains a reported market scenario, not a completed move. Any step depends on salaries, exits and club negotiations.
