Alessandro Bastoni has become another name capable of shaking the market between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. The Italian centre-back has long been liked at the Camp Nou for hierarchy, left foot and build-up play. However, Madrid have reportedly now entered strongly to try to move ahead again.
The situation creates concern at Barça because this would not be the first complicated target. Bernardo Silva, Dumfries and Cucurella had already appeared in uncomfortable market battles. Now, Bastoni’s name threatens to open another painful chapter between the two giants.
Bastoni fits both projects
Bastoni is one of the most valued left-footed centre-backs in European football. His ability to start attacks from deep makes him a very special profile. That quality on the ball explains why Flick and Deco had tracked him.
Barça wanted a defender capable of offering clean build-up, leadership and international experience immediately. Bastoni met those requirements and fitted a defence designed to dominate higher up. But his price was always a huge obstacle for Barça’s current economy.
Inter Milan have no need to gift away a player contracted until 2028. The Italian club know they have a differential, loved and highly competitive asset. That is why the minimum exit figure would be around €70 million.
Madrid appear at the right moment
Real Madrid have detected an opportunity in a very limited centre-back market. The white club want a left-footed, reliable defender with maximum hierarchy. Bastoni fits through age, experience, personality and big-game competitiveness.
Madrid’s entry completely changes the scenario Barça had been managing in recent months. The blaugrana club already had the operation complicated by price and priorities. If Madrid accelerate, Deco’s room for manoeuvre becomes even smaller.
In Italy, reports suggest there has already been high-level contact between clubs. Florentino Pérez and Beppe Marotta would have discussed the defender in recent market conversations. Inter would listen, but only to an offer justifying losing Bastoni.
Barça fear another strategic defeat
For Barça, losing Bastoni to Madrid would carry a particularly bitter reading. It would not only mean missing a target, but strengthening the eternal rival. Those market blows weigh much more than a normal international transfer.
Flick needs defenders capable of holding a high line and correcting spaces. Bastoni offered exactly that mix of defensive hierarchy and technical build-up quality. That is why his name always made sense inside Barça’s planning.
The problem is that Barça also have huge priorities elsewhere, especially in attack. The operation for Julián Álvarez conditions a major part of the budget. If the club must choose, a €70 million centre-back could be impossible.
Inter and Bastoni hold the final word
Inter know selling Bastoni would be a very difficult sporting decision. But they also understand a major sale could finance several important signings. That tension between competitiveness and money will shape any possible negotiation.
The player has not publicly shown any desire to force an immediate exit. His long contract leaves Inter in a very strong position to resist. Even so, a call from Madrid can always change the tone.
Barça observe with concern, but without clear capacity to enter an immediate auction. Madrid have money, defensive urgency and a project looking for another authority move. The twist is clear: if Bastoni ends up in white, Barça will suffer another painful defeat on their agenda.
Caution note: At the time of writing, there is no official agreement between Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Barça and Alessandro Bastoni.
