Marc Cucurella is back on Barcelona’s radar, and this time the situation looks much clearer. The full-back would be open to signing for the Catalan club and sees the move as a return home. However, there have still been no formal talks with Deco to seriously advance the operation.
The case makes sense within the summer Barça are preparing to strengthen several areas of the squad. The club are still assessing moves at full-back, but Financial Fair Play conditions every major decision. That is where Cucurella’s biggest problem appears: his price would be around €50 million.
This is not just any player, nor a purely sentimental option for the club. Cucurella is 27 years old, has a long contract and is still competing at a very high level in England. That explains perfectly why Barcelona’s room for manoeuvre remains very limited right now.
A return that really attracts Barça
Inside the club, they know his profile perfectly and understand what he could bring to Flick’s system. He is an intense, aggressive and energetic full-back, with constant effort without the ball. His connection with La Masia and the Barça style also gives his name special value.
That emotional factor matters a lot in the Barça environment, but it does not solve the operation alone. Barcelona have not started contacts with the player or with Chelsea at this stage. Right now, he is liked as a possibility, but there is no real offensive underway.
What is clear inside the club is that his profile fits very well with what Flick wants. The German coach needs reliable, intense full-backs ready to compete at the highest level immediately. In that sense, Cucurella appears as a serious solution to raise the team’s level.
Flick sees him as an ideal reinforcement
The coaching staff want players capable of sustaining rhythm, pressure and intensity throughout the season. Cucurella responds exactly to that idea because of his energy, consistency and tactical commitment. That is why his name generates real interest, even without an open negotiation.
It also matters that Barça cannot afford this type of operation without moving another important piece first. Any serious attempt to sign him would depend on a major sale in the defensive line. Only by freeing significant margin would it make sense to attack such an expensive deal.
The economic logic of the case is quite simple inside the Camp Nou offices this summer. Even if the player sees the move as an ideal return, Barça cannot assume that cost without selling. Before thinking about his comeback, the club must close an important exit or completely reorganise the defence.
The price is the biggest wall
The conclusion inside Barça is becoming quite clear with this case on the table. Cucurella is open to returning, his profile is liked and Flick sees him as a necessary reinforcement. But there are no formal negotiations and his price remains too high without a powerful sale.
If Barcelona really want to try, they will have to move important pieces first. The desire exists, the fit is obvious and the return would excite many Barça fans. Now the only question is whether the club can turn that dream into a real operation.
