Marcus Rashford has entered a decisive phase after his loan spell at FC Barcelona. The blaugrana club have not activated the €30 million purchase option. Now, the forward must return to Manchester United with his future completely blocked.
The situation has changed because United no longer seem ready to reintegrate him. The English club want to save salary, generate income and close a permanent exit. However, Rashford still sees Barça as his favourite destination if another route appears.
United want to sell and avoid another problem
Manchester United understand that Rashford’s cycle at Old Trafford is practically over. He has a contract until 2028, but his salary complicates planning. That is why United want a buyer before the market moves too far.
The problem is that the player is not accepting every available destination. Rashford wants a competitive and attractive club to restore his European prominence. That position reduces United’s margin and could stretch talks until August.
Bayern Munich appeared as an important alternative in the last few weeks. The German club studied the operation and could approach €25 million. But the player’s salary complicated everything, and the Bavarian route lost strength.
Barça wait without moving too much
At Barça, there is currently no sense of urgency around the English winger. The arrival of Anthony Gordon has covered a position that looked more open. Deco and Hansi Flick still prioritise finding a differential centre-forward.
That does not mean Rashford has completely disappeared from Barça’s planning. The club know the market can turn him into an opportunity again. If United accept a loan, Barça could re-enter the scene calmly.
The key is that Barça do not want to pay a transfer fee. Their financial situation forces them to avoid moves blocking bigger priorities. That makes an affordable loan with controlled salary the only attractive formula.
Rashford holds onto Camp Nou
The English forward knows his room for manoeuvre depends on the coming weeks. If he rejects major destinations, United may run out of real solutions. That wait can create tension, but also move him closer to Barcelona.
His camp still sees Barça as a very attractive destination for his future. Rashford already knows the city, dressing room and competitive demands. He also trusts Flick could value his profile again if the market tightens.
However, the situation does not depend only on his personal preferences. Barça have other priorities, United want a sale, and clubs can still appear. Everything will depend on money, salary and the player’s resistance to alternatives.
The summer could give him another chance
The Rashford case now becomes a patience game between three different parties. United want a quick solution, Barça wait, and the player protects his ideal destination. That combination could create a long block until the market’s final stretch.
For Barça, the advantage is precisely not having to rush or commit now. If Rashford gets trapped in Manchester, United’s pressure could change the conditions. A deal impossible in June could become very interesting in August.
Rashford will not continue through the initial route, but he remains on Barça’s radar. His future depends on United, his salary and Barça’s patience. The twist is clear: the door looked closed, but a loan could still reopen it.
Caution note: At the time of writing, there is no official agreement between Barça, Manchester United and Marcus Rashford.
