FC Barcelona came painfully close to completing one of the greatest comebacks in recent memory, but ultimately fell just short against Atlético Madrid in the Copa del Rey semifinals. Hansi Flick’s side delivered an almost flawless performance at the Spotify Camp Nou, winning 3-0 on the night, yet it was not enough to overturn the heavy first-leg deficit.
The Catalans needed a miracle after losing 4-0 in Madrid, and for long stretches it felt as though that miracle might actually happen. Goals from Marc Bernal, who scored twice, and Raphinha ignited belief across the stadium. But despite relentless pressure in the closing minutes, the decisive goal to force extra time never arrived.
Lamine Yamal ignites belief at Camp Nou
From the opening minutes, the message inside the stadium was clear: belief above all else. The phrase “1% chance, 99% faith” echoed among supporters, recalling Barcelona’s legendary comeback against PSG years ago. On this night, the player leading that belief was Lamine Yamal.
The young winger was electric from the first touch. His creativity and daring gave Barça the spark they desperately needed, while the crowd transformed the stadium into a relentless wave of noise. Even an early setback — an injury to Jules Koundé that forced a defensive reshuffle — did little to break Barcelona’s rhythm.
Atlético remained dangerous on the counterattack, with Antoine Griezmann coming close to scoring early on. But unlike the first leg, fortune was not on Atlético’s side.
Bernal and Raphinha give Barça hope
Barcelona’s first breakthrough arrived after a brilliant attacking sequence. Yamal surged forward and delivered a perfect cut-back pass that Marc Bernal converted with precision, sending the Camp Nou into celebration.
Just before halftime, the momentum grew even stronger. A dynamic run into the box by Pedri resulted in a clear penalty, which Raphinha calmly converted from the spot. Suddenly, the impossible began to feel within reach.
A heroic effort that ends in heartbreak
The second half followed the same script: relentless Barça pressure. The defensive leadership of Pau Cubarsí and the creativity of Pedri kept Atlético pinned back.
Eventually, Bernal struck again, finishing a cross from João Cancelo to make it 3-0 and ignite hopes of extra time. The final minutes saw Barça throw everything forward, even pushing Ronald Araújo into attack.
But the final goal never came. Barça fought with pride until the very end, yet the comeback stopped just one step short. Atlético Madrid, despite a nervous performance, advance to the Copa del Rey final.
