Marc-André ter Stegen has once again become a major file in FC Barcelona’s summer market. The German goalkeeper no longer has a guaranteed leading role in the new blaugrana project. Now, Míchel’s Ajax have knocked on his door to try to take him away from the club.
The Spanish coach has just arrived in Amsterdam with the aim of rebuilding a competitive team. One of his first priorities would be to strengthen the goalkeeping position with experience, leadership and immediate security. In that scenario, Ter Stegen appears as a very attractive name for the new Dutch project.
The operation, however, has a huge problem from the very beginning: salary. The German earns a very high wage at Barça and Ajax cannot get close to those figures. That means any move would depend on a major pay cut or a very creative formula.
Míchel wants a leader
Míchel knows Ter Stegen well and values his experience in high-pressure contexts. The coach wants a goalkeeper capable of organising the defence and providing security from the back. For an Ajax side in reconstruction, that leadership would carry enormous weight inside the dressing room.
The Dutch club need to recover stability after a very difficult season at sporting level. Their new project requires players ready to compete, but also to guide younger teammates. Ter Stegen would fit that profile perfectly because of his career, character and European experience.
Ajax also now have Jordi Cruyff inside their sporting structure. That detail helps explain why their attention has turned towards the Barça market again. The connection between Amsterdam and Barcelona has always been strong, especially during rebuilds.
Barça want to reduce the wage bill
For Barça, Ter Stegen’s departure would have an obvious financial reading. The German remains one of the highest earners in the squad and still has a valid contract. Removing that salary would create margin for registrations and pending market movements.
The blaugrana goalkeeping department has already changed significantly in recent months. Joan García appears as the main bet and the club are also studying another veteran profile. In that context, Ter Stegen has gone from historic untouchable to a delicate file.
Barça do not want to give him away, but they understand his continuity could be difficult without a clear role. If the player prioritises minutes, he will have to seriously consider leaving this summer. If he prioritises contract and salary, the Ajax operation becomes extremely complicated.
Salary blocks the deal
The biggest obstacle is the financial gap between what Ter Stegen earns and what Ajax can pay. According to Fichajes.net, the German earns between €13 million and €15 million per season in Barcelona. The Dutch club could only approach a much lower figure.
That distance forces the goalkeeper to make a very important decision about his career. He must choose between maintaining a huge contract or joining a project where he feels important again. At 34 years old, regular minutes start to matter almost as much as money.
Ajax can offer him prominence, leadership and an attractive European challenge under Míchel. But they cannot compete with the salary figures he still has signed in Barcelona. That is why the player will hold the key if the operation is to advance.
Deco watches closely
Deco knows that solving the Ter Stegen file could help organise the squad significantly. Not only because of the salary, but also because of sporting clarity in goal. Hansi Flick needs to know as soon as possible which goalkeepers he will really have next season.
A departure would make the new role distribution easier and avoid an uncomfortable dressing-room situation. Ter Stegen has been a Barça symbol, but football changes very quickly. The club are already preparing a different goalkeeping structure for a new era.
Ajax appear as an interesting route, although the deal is still far from simple. Míchel wants him, Barça would welcome wage relief and the player must decide. And that is the twist: Ter Stegen has an open door, but he must accept losing money to walk through it.
Caution note: This article is based on reports from Fichajes.net and current transfer speculation. At the time of writing, there is no official agreement between FC Barcelona, Ajax and Marc-André ter Stegen regarding a transfer.
