Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski, once again the captain of Poland, was the key player in his national team’s victory over Finland (3-1) in the crucial Group G European qualifier for the 2026 World Cup on Sunday. On Thursday against the Netherlands, during his return to the national team, Lewandowski did not have the best performance (1-1), but against the Finns, he shone with a goal and an assist.
It was Aston Villa’s right-back Matty Cash, who with his goal on Thursday prevented Poland from losing against Ronald Koeman’s team, who set the course for the victory against Finland with a goal in the 27th minute, seizing on a pass back from Jakub Kaminski
In the injury time of the first half, it was Lewandowski’s moment, as he received a through ball from Nicola Zalewski and slipped through the Finnish defense to score Poland’s second goal. The Barça striker has now scored 86 goals in 160 matches for his national team.

As the second half began, it was Lewandowski himself who served the ball for Kaminski to score the third goal. It was the 55th minute. However, Finland closed the gap as Benjamin Kallman scored the 3-1 in the 88th minute with a left-footed shot after receiving a pass from Nikolai Alho.
The Barcelona player returned to the national team on Thursday, having stepped down following a clash with former coach Michal Probierz, who had stripped him of the captaincy. With the appointment of Jan Urban as the new coach, Lewandowski has returned to his national squad and regained his captaincy.
This victory boosts Lewandowski and Poland’s dream of participating in the 2026 World Cup. The Polish team remains tied with Netherlands, the leader due to goal difference. Finland now lags 3 points behind Poland and Netherlands.
