The name of Julián Álvarez has once again resurfaced around FC Barcelona. However, the possibility of a move to the Catalan club has cooled slightly in recent hours. While the Argentine forward has avoided confirming his long-term future with Atlético de Madrid, Barça president Joan Laporta has made it clear that the club will not make an excessive financial investment.
The situation comes at a time when Barcelona is still searching for a long-term solution at striker, particularly considering the age of Robert Lewandowski.
Julián Álvarez leaves his future open
The Argentine forward was one of the standout performers after Atlético Madrid’s emphatic 5–2 victory against Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.
Álvarez scored twice and provided an assist in a dominant display.
After the match, he was asked about his future at Atlético Madrid, and his response left the door open to different possibilities.
“Who knows… maybe yes, maybe no. You never know,” he said when asked if he would remain at Atlético next season.
Despite that comment, the striker also tried to calm speculation.
He explained that he is very happy at the club, focused on the present and grateful for the support he has received since arriving in Madrid.
A striker highly valued at Barça
Inside Barcelona, Álvarez has long been viewed as a very attractive attacking option. His profile fits well with the system of Hansi Flick thanks to his mobility, pressing ability and finishing.
This season he continues to prove his quality, scoring 16 goals across La Liga, the Champions League and domestic cup competitions.
Last season he was already Atlético’s top scorer with 29 goals after arriving from Manchester City in a deal worth around €75 million.
Laporta cools the speculation
Despite his admiration for the player, Laporta has been clear about Barcelona’s stance regarding a possible transfer.
Speaking on the radio program “Què t’hi jugues” on Cadena SER, the Barça president admitted that the Argentine striker is highly appreciated within the club but insisted that Barcelona will not overspend.
“He is a great player, but not at a price that would break the bank,” Laporta explained.
The president also added that for the club to consider such a move, the player would first need to show a clear desire to join Barcelona and the transfer fee would have to be reasonable.
A very difficult transfer
The main obstacle in the deal is financial. Julián Álvarez is under contract with Atlético Madrid until 2030, and his estimated market value is close to €100 million.
On top of that, his release clause reportedly stands at €500 million, giving the Madrid club a very strong position in any negotiation.
For that reason, Barcelona continues to keep other attacking options open while it decides how to approach the future of Lewandowski, whose contract situation remains a key topic in the club’s long-term planning.
