Atlético speak about €500 million, but certain provisions could bring the signing closer to another reality.
The Julián Álvarez case could take a much more important turn than initially expected. Atlético Madrid publicly continue to insist on his €500 million release clause. However, that figure may not be so straightforward according to recent market reports.
According to Ben Jacobs, the Argentine striker’s contract reportedly includes specific provisions for certain Champions League clubs. That exception could allow an operation to be completed below the publicly stated clause. Around Barça, figures between €130 million and €150 million are already being discussed.
The clause may not be so simple
Atlético’s official version will remain exactly the same throughout this battle. Julián has a contract until 2030 and a €500 million protective clause. That position allows the club to defend a very hard stance against external pressure.
However, the contract could hide a more complex route for certain European scenarios. Not every club would reportedly face the same conditions or contractual requirements. That is the loophole Barça want to study carefully before making any move.
The difference would completely transform the economic interpretation of the entire case. Facing €500 million is very different from completing an operation near €150 million. That remains enormous, but enters a more imaginable territory for an elite club.
The real cost would increase with taxes
The reason no club has taken the definitive step could also be financial. Even if the contractual route reduced the exit to approximately €130 million, costs would continue. Taxes and associated charges could reportedly raise the final operation towards €150 million.
That detail explains why the case remains extremely difficult despite the possible exception. Barça would need a huge financial structure involving payments, sales and sufficient salary margin. Returning to the 1:1 rule helps, but does not make this signing simple.
Deco knows any move for Julián would force important decisions across other files. Exits, salary savings and registration control would become essential for sustaining a historic offer. The player’s desire alone will not be enough without a financially viable formula.
Atlético will deny everything
Atlético have obvious reasons to deny any version reducing their public release clause. Admitting an exception would weaken their negotiating position and increase pressure internally. The club will therefore continue defending €500 million as the only possible route.
In Madrid, they do not want to sell Julián, particularly not directly to Barça. Institutional relations have become tense after recent reports and possible legal threats. Atlético want to project strength, even if the contract is more complex privately.
The key will be discovering which clubs can activate that route and under which conditions. If Barça belong to the potentially favoured group, the operation changes immediately. Otherwise, everything returns to the almost impossible €500 million wall.
Barça prepare their major blow
Barça are already working around an offensive reportedly worth €120–130 million. That figure would fit the possibility of an operation below the official clause. Including taxes and the full structure, the total could eventually approach €150 million.
Hansi Flick considers Julián the perfect striker to lead a new attacking era. He presses, scores, combines, competes and understands football with exceptional maturity. That is why Barça are prepared to study an operation that would be historic.
The most important factor remains the footballer’s will, with Barça reportedly his preferred destination. If Julián maintains that position, Atlético must manage a sporting and emotional problem. And if this loophole exists, Deco could suddenly have an unexpected opportunity.
An operation at the limit
Julián Álvarez’s signing remains far from completed and could collapse at any moment. Atlético will resist, Barça will search for margin and the player must remain firm. But this possible contractual exception completely changes the transfer market’s story.
This is no longer only about an impossible clause or an unreachable dream. There is now a reported range which, despite being enormous, could enter real negotiations. That scenario explains why the case has become the summer’s biggest transfer bombshell.
Atlético will keep speaking about €500 million because they must protect their position. Barça, meanwhile, will study every contractual line seeking a legal and affordable route. The twist is clear: if the loophole exists, Julián could become a €150 million operation instead of an impossible dream.
Caution note: At the time of writing, there is no official confirmation of this contractual provision and no agreement between Barça, Atlético Madrid and Julián Álvarez.
