One of the most important issues of Joan Laporta’s new term is already being addressed at Barcelona. With the electoral process now complete and his continuity as president secured, the club has started working again on a key matter that had been left on hold for weeks. Inside the offices, there is a feeling that it cannot remain unresolved much longer.
The German coach has become a hugely influential figure within Barça’s sporting project. His impact was felt immediately from the very beginning, transforming the mood in the dressing room and restoring a level of competitiveness that had seemed far away. He has also achieved that without demanding a complete rebuild of the squad or a reckless investment in new signings.
That detail has only strengthened his standing with the board. At a time when the club is still dealing with financial limitations, Barcelona especially values managers who can raise the team’s level without asking for sweeping changes. In that context, the German’s work has fully convinced both Deco and Laporta.
The club’s intention has been clear for quite some time. Extending the coach’s contract was already one of the major internal priorities, but the decision was made to wait until after the elections to approach the matter more calmly. Now that the institutional picture is clearer, Barça have already begun to take the first steps.

Deco has already made contact with the coach’s camp
According to the published information, Deco met with Pini Zahavi in Barcelona last Saturday. The meeting was informal, but it allowed both sides to bring up several matters linked to the future of the Barça bench. Among those topics, unsurprisingly, was the contractual situation of the coach, whose current deal runs until June 2027.
The relationship between Deco and Zahavi has been smooth for years, something that makes these conversations easier. Inside the club, there is a belief that the time has come to start preparing an extension, although there is also no desire to force an unnecessary situation. The main objective is to preserve stability around the manager.
Barcelona have already made their position known to the German coach’s entourage: they want to extend his deal as soon as possible. Confidence in his work is absolute, not only because of the results, but also because of the way he has improved young players and successfully integrated academy talent into the first team. That carries major weight within Barça’s sporting model.

Flick feels comfortable, but does not want to rush
Despite the club’s interest, the coach is in no hurry. Flick is focused entirely on the season and believes the right moment has not yet arrived to sit down and finalise a formal renewal. There is no tension and no real doubt about his future, only a difference in timing.
The German has always made it clear that he prefers to move step by step at this stage of his career. At 61 years old, he is not looking to make overly long-term plans and also places strong importance on his personal and family life. That mindset explains why he does not want to rush into final talks while the season is still ongoing.
In recent hours, Zahavi also met personally with the coach in Barcelona. The two have a relationship built on complete trust, and they used the opportunity to discuss the current situation of the project. The message remained exactly the same: Barça are ready to renew now, but Flick would rather wait a little longer before giving his final approval.
Inside the club, there is calm because the relationship is excellent and the coach feels very comfortable in Barcelona. If the decision depended only on those in the offices, the contract would be signed immediately. But the man currently setting the pace for the Barça bench is Hansi Flick.
