The Englishman keeps waiting for the blaugrana club, but Anthony Gordon’s signing has completely changed the scenario.
Marcus Rashford is starting to see his future move closer to Manchester United again. The English winger has postponed any major decision until finishing his World Cup campaign with England. However, the scenario no longer favours a return to FC Barcelona.
The signing of Anthony Gordon completely surprised the player and changed Barça’s attacking planning. Rashford wanted to wait for Barça until almost the end of the market. But now, his option looks very cold unless an important attacking exit reopens the door.
Gordon closes the path
Barça’s bet on Gordon was clear, strong and difficult to interpret differently. The club decided to invest heavily in a winger for an area where Rashford could also fit. That decision greatly reduced the margin to keep the United player’s route alive.
The Englishman, despite everything, has not wanted to listen to many alternatives recently. His two preferred scenarios remain continuing at United or returning to Barça. He does not want just any loan or a destination away from elite competition.
The problem is that Barça’s attack is almost complete if a centre-forward arrives. With Gordon, Raphinha, Lamine Yamal, Ferran Torres and other offensive profiles, space is limited. That is why Rashford’s future depends more on an exit than his own desire.
Raphinha, the only real key
The file that could change everything is Raphinha’s, although it currently looks quite cold. The Brazilian has important offers from Saudi Arabia, but has not clearly pushed to leave. While he remains at Barça, Rashford has very few real options to return.
If Raphinha left, the attacking distribution would change completely inside the squad. Gordon could take a role closer to the Brazilian’s, with work, pressing and intensity. Rashford, meanwhile, would enter as a more specific, vertical winger attacking space.
That scenario still looks distant, but cannot be ruled out in such a long market. Barça need income, salary margin and solutions to move with freedom. A major Raphinha sale could reactivate an operation that today looks almost switched off.
United begin to change position
At Manchester United, the situation has also taken an unexpected turn in recent weeks. When the season ended, Rashford’s continuity looked almost impossible because of internal problems. Now, the club are starting to think keeping him may be better than underselling him.
The market is conditioned by the World Cup, and finding top-level wingers is not easy. United also have other priorities, especially in the centre of midfield. If no strong proposal arrives, Rashford could return to preseason as an internal solution.
Important dressing-room players, such as Harry Maguire, have publicly asked for him to return confidently. That message helps soften a context that looked completely broken months ago. Rashford still must rebuild relationships, but the road to Old Trafford no longer seems closed.
The World Cup can influence everything
Rashford’s performances with England could also carry weight in his immediate future. The winger has gained prominence with the national team and competes directly with Gordon. That battle adds intrigue because Barça signed one while the other keeps waiting.
Rashford has shown he still has pace, imbalance and ability to change matches. Gordon, meanwhile, has had to live with more pressure after his Barça move. The English debate does not decide the market, but it fuels doubts around Barça’s planning.
Even so, the blaugrana club will not decide only because of the World Cup. Deco is looking at salaries, squad space, Fair Play and fit under Flick. In every area, Rashford only makes sense if an important place is freed.
A future pending August
The final resolution of the case could stretch into mid-August or the end of the market. Rashford does not want to rush, United will not give him away and Barça need a very specific scenario. The operation remains alive in theory, but very cold in practice.
For the player, returning to Barça remains attractive because of level, style and visibility. But the blaugrana club already made an important decision by betting on Gordon. Now, Rashford watches the Camp Nou from distance, waiting for an exit that may never happen.
Everything suggests United have regained strength as the Englishman’s most likely destination. Only an unexpected attacking sale could change the story in Barcelona. The twist is clear: Rashford has not closed the door on Barça, but Barça have almost closed it on him.
Caution note: At the time of writing, there is no official agreement between Barça, Manchester United and Marcus Rashford.
