The Portuguese convinces again at the World Cup, and his continuity gains weight inside Barça’s planning.
João Cancelo is back at the centre of FC Barcelona’s transfer market. The Portuguese full-back has convinced Hansi Flick again with his performances and competitive personality. The German coach wants the club to react quickly and reactivate his continuity.
The operation is not closed, because Al Hilal still control the player’s future. But inside Barça, there is already a clear idea: Cancelo offers rare solutions. Flick considers him too useful to let him escape without fighting until the end.
Flick wants solutions, not experiments
Flick is not only looking for a classic right-back, solid defensively and correct on the ball. He wants players capable of interpreting several heights, moving inside and changing structures during matches. In that type of plan, Cancelo fits much better than most market options.
The Portuguese can play on the right, appear on the left and move inside naturally. That versatility gives Barça a tactical richness that is very difficult to find at reasonable cost. His experience also helps balance a squad full of extremely talented young players.
His recent performances with Portugal have strengthened the coaching staff’s argument even more. Cancelo has shown he still has rhythm, quality and influence in attacking areas. That is why Flick pushes: Barça already know exactly what he can provide.
Al Hilal will be the big obstacle
The main problem remains Al Hilal, the club controlling his rights until 2027. Barça cannot act as if the operation depends only on the player’s desire. They will need negotiation, an affordable formula and agreement with a difficult club.
Market figures around €10 million to €15 million have been mentioned in recent weeks. For Barça, that amount could be manageable if it fits inside available Fair Play. But Deco does not want to compromise other priority files by rushing.
The figure of Jorge Mendes could be decisive to bring positions closer soon. The agent knows Barça, the player and the dynamics of these operations very well. If anyone can find an intermediate route with Al Hilal, Mendes is that name.
The Koundé file also matters
The Cancelo case cannot be fully separated from Jules Koundé’s future. Barça will not sign a new full-back if the Frenchman remains important in the squad. But if Koundé leaves, the Portuguese’s continuity would make even more sense.
Flick needs clarity before the season starts, especially in such a delicate area. He does not want to begin preseason with structural doubts at right-back. That is why Cancelo appears as a known, useful and already adapted solution.
Barça must also assess the cost of finding another top-level full-back in today’s market. Reliable, attacking and tactically rich profiles usually come with very high prices. Keeping Cancelo would save time, reduce risk and focus resources elsewhere.
Deco must move soon
Flick’s request places direct pressure on Deco and Barça’s sporting department. The German coach believes Cancelo can remain important if he arrives physically ready. His versatility would also avoid too many improvised solutions during the season.
Barça want to be cautious, but they know waiting too long could complicate everything. If the World Cup keeps increasing his visibility, Al Hilal will gain negotiating strength. Every strong Cancelo performance helps Flick, but can also make the operation harder.
The final decision will depend on price, salary margin and other defenders’ futures. But the sporting message is becoming increasingly clear inside the blaugrana club. The twist is clear: Flick wants Cancelo, and now Barça must decide whether to turn that request into a real offensive.
Caution note: At the time of writing, there is no official agreement between Barça, Al Hilal and João Cancelo.
