Alejandro Grimaldo is once again gaining strong traction on the radar of FC Barcelona ahead of the upcoming summer window. The Bayer Leverkusen full-back is preparing for a change of scenery, and his situation has reactivated several movements. Inside the club, they are closely monitoring him because his price could turn him into a major market opportunity.
By the end of the current season in Germany, the defender will have just one year left on his contract. That opens the door to a potential exit for less than €12 million, a figure that has already caught the attention of several European giants. Alongside Barça, clubs like Juventus and AC Milan are also tracking his situation closely.
The player himself would welcome a return to LaLiga and is prioritizing a move that truly motivates him. That’s where Barça once again gains ground in the race, especially with Hansi Flick pushing for reinforcements in that position.
Barça almost signed him last summer
This is not the first time Grimaldo has been on Barça’s shortlist. Last summer, the sporting department worked seriously on a deal to bring him in. In fact, an agreement with the player was already quite advanced at one stage.
The plan was clear: strengthen the full-back positions with more depth and competition. Flick wants more solutions on both flanks, and Grimaldo fits perfectly because he can provide rest and rotation for both Jules Koundé and Alejandro Balde.
However, the move collapsed due to an internal issue. Barça needed Gerard Martín to leave in order to free space, but the youngster decided to stay, blocking the operation entirely.
A new scenario opens the door again
Now, the situation has changed. Barça is considering a restructure of the full-back positions, with several movements expected this summer. That shift brings Grimaldo back into serious consideration.
Gerard Martín has gained importance thanks to his versatility and development, becoming almost untouchable. Meanwhile, Balde’s future is not fully guaranteed, as the club would listen to strong offers if they arrive.
Grimaldo is not the only option
If Balde stays, Grimaldo’s arrival becomes less necessary. But if he leaves, the door opens wide for a potential return. Even so, Barça is exploring other alternatives as well.
One of them is Andrea Cambiaso, a profile highly valued by the sporting department. However, his price would be around €30 million, making him a much more expensive option.
That’s where Grimaldo stands out. For under €12 million, Barça could secure experience, quality, and a reliable solution for the flanks. And if the market unfolds as expected, his name will keep gaining strength in the coming weeks.
