FC Barcelona are already working on a major defensive operation for this summer. The club have initiated contacts for Castello Lukeba, the talented centre-back from RB Leipzig. The move reportedly comes directly from Hansi Flick, who wants more authority and athleticism in the heart of his defence.
The German manager believes the squad needs a left-footed defender capable of competing at the highest level. The objective is to find a profile that can improve both build-up play and Barça’s high defensive line. In that context, Lukeba stands out as a powerful, young and highly regarded option across Europe.
The operation, however, will not be easy or cheap. Leipzig have the player tied down until 2029 and have no intention of facilitating his departure. Reports from Germany suggest a valuation close to €60 million, making him one of the most expensive defensive targets on Barça’s shortlist.
Flick wants a left-footed centre-back
The interest makes perfect sense when looking at the type of defence Flick wants to build in Barcelona. The German coach is searching for quick, aggressive defenders who are comfortable operating far away from their own penalty area. Lukeba fits that profile thanks to his physicality, anticipation, ball-carrying ability and clean distribution.
Barça already have Pau Cubarsí, one of the biggest certainties of the new project. However, the club want to surround him with complementary pieces capable of sustaining high-level performances in Europe. A natural left-footed centre-back would help balance the defensive line and improve the team’s structure in possession.
Lukeba also offers an attractive combination of youth and long-term potential. At just 23 years old, he still has significant room for growth while already competing at an elite level. That makes him both a present-day solution and a future investment.
Leipzig will not make it easy
The biggest obstacle remains RB Leipzig’s position. The German side hold all the leverage thanks to a long-term contract and no financial pressure to sell. That situation allows them to demand a premium fee for one of their most valuable assets.
According to Fichajes.net, Leipzig value the French defender at around €60 million. Other reports in Germany have suggested even higher figures could be required to start negotiations. As a result, Deco will need to carefully balance sales, Financial Fair Play and transfer priorities before accelerating the operation.
There is also strong competition from abroad. Arsenal have been linked with Lukeba for months and Premier League clubs possess far greater spending power. If English teams enter the race seriously, Barça will struggle to compete in a straightforward bidding war.
Deco is working on several fronts
Barcelona’s defensive planning remains closely linked to other situations within the squad. The futures of Jules Koundé, Alejandro Balde and even Ronald Araújo could significantly alter the club’s strategy. If a major defender leaves, signing a centre-back may become an immediate necessity.
For that reason, Deco is exploring multiple alternatives, but Lukeba occupies a special place on the shortlist. He would not be a short-term patch or opportunistic signing. Instead, he would represent a structural addition designed to anchor Barça’s defence for many years.
The club are simultaneously monitoring operations involving João Cancelo, Bernardo Silva and Julián Álvarez, which means resources must be distributed very carefully. Every major arrival will depend on departures, salary savings and registration capacity.
The perfect partner for Cubarsí
Inside the club, the idea of pairing Lukeba with Cubarsí is viewed as particularly attractive. The Frenchman would provide pace, power and a natural left-footed profile, while Cubarsí would contribute composure, positioning and distribution. Together, they could form Barça’s central defensive partnership for the next decade.
Flick wants a team capable of pressing high without suffering whenever opponents attack in transition. To achieve that, he needs defenders who can cover large spaces and win open-field duels. Lukeba possesses exactly those qualities.
His arrival would also help Barça cope with an increasingly demanding calendar. Champions League football requires defenders who combine speed, concentration and reliability under pressure. The club know that defensive weaknesses have played a major role in several European eliminations in recent years.
A difficult operation, but one that makes sense
The move for Lukeba remains far from completion. There are contacts, clear interest and strong backing from Flick, but the most difficult part still lies ahead. Barça must convince Leipzig and find a financial structure that makes the transfer possible.
The operation will only make sense if the club can balance transfer cost, wages and wider market priorities. Barça cannot afford to compromise the entire summer window for a single defender, no matter how highly rated he is. Even so, Flick continues to push because he believes the defence requires another major step forward.
The outcome will depend on the coming weeks and on how much room Deco can generate through sales and departures. Lukeba is already one of the strongest names on Barça’s defensive shortlist. And that is the twist: Flick is not asking for just any centre-back — he wants a long-term defensive wall alongside Cubarsí.
Caution note: This article is based on reports from Fichajes.net and ongoing transfer speculation. At the time of writing, there is no official agreement between FC Barcelona and RB Leipzig for Castello Lukeba.
