Barcelona are already starting to design next season’s squad, and Hansi Flick has marked a very specific priority. The German coach wants to keep counting on João Cancelo and has already made that desire clear to the sporting department. Inside the club, his case is no longer seen as just a market opportunity, but as a direct request from the coach.
The view of the Portuguese full-back has changed a lot in recent months inside the Barça environment. When he arrived, there were doubts about his recent context, his competitive rhythm and how he could fit the system. However, as the matches have passed, he has fully convinced the Barça coaching staff.
Flick sees Cancelo as very valuable
What Flick likes most is not only his numbers or his occasional impact in attack. The coach especially values his personality, experience and ability to take responsibility under pressure. Cancelo does not hide, breaks lines, steps into the opposition half and offers solutions when the team needs something different.
That type of full-back fits very well with the German coach’s idea for the next project. Flick wants players capable of sustaining long attacks, competing with intensity and keeping the team’s rhythm high. The Portuguese responds well to that demand through aggression, tactical reading and constant presence in both phases.
His versatility has also raised his value even further inside the squad. Although he arrived with the status of a right-back, he has also provided interesting answers from the left side. That ability to adapt to different scenarios gives Barça a very useful tactical tool.
The negotiation is the big obstacle
The main problem for the club is not the coach’s desire or the player’s will. The real difficulty lies in the negotiation, because João Cancelo remains under contract with Al-Hilal until 2027. That means Barça cannot secure his continuity without finding an affordable financial formula.
At Camp Nou, they already knew this file would not be simple or comfortable. Deco will have to work on a structure that allows the player to stay without breaking the market balance. The club do not want to enter an uncontrolled operation, although they fully understand the weight of Flick’s request.
Barça do have one important card in their favour. Cancelo himself wants to continue and has not hidden that he sees the Catalan club as an ideal destination. That willingness helps a lot, although it will not be enough on its own to unlock the final agreement.
Flick does not want to lose him
The conclusion inside the club is becoming quite clear with everything surrounding the Portuguese full-back. Hansi Flick has already made one of his first major requests, and it is to secure João Cancelo’s continuity. Now Barça must prove whether they can turn that desire into one of the first operations of the summer.
If the club manage it, they will not only be keeping a useful full-back to complete the squad. They will be retaining a player who has already shown personality, immediate performance and the ability to solve real problems. For Flick, that is worth much more than an uncertain future bet.
