FC Barcelona have already made an important decision ahead of the summer. Hansi Flick has given the green light to João Cancelo’s continuity, convinced that his performances and his versatility make him a very useful piece inside the squad. Recent reporting says Flick wants to keep the Portuguese defender beyond the current loan spell, while Barça would only seriously pursue the move if it can be done on financially favourable terms.
What looked a few months ago like a short-term market opportunity has now turned into a much clearer commitment. The German coach has gone from prioritising other profiles to seeing Cancelo as a key resource on both flanks. His ability to solve problems in different positions has ended up fully convincing the coaching staff.
The picture has changed completely. Cancelo has won over the technical staff, and Barça are already working on a formula to keep him beyond June. But there is one major issue that still shapes the entire operation.
The condition that changes everything
Barcelona’s position is very clear: Cancelo will only stay if he arrives on a free transfer. He currently belongs to Al Hilal, the club that signed him in 2024, and he still has one year left on his contract there. That means the move depends on the player managing to free himself without Barça having to pay a transfer fee. Reporting today says that is exactly the scenario the club are trying to build.
Inside the club, there is no intention of paying for the transfer. The operation only makes sense if it comes at zero cost and with a salary adapted to Barça’s current financial reality. That is the red line in the whole case.
And that is where the biggest sacrifice would come from the player himself.
Cancelo would have to give up a lot of money
Cancelo’s current salary in Saudi Arabia is far beyond what Barcelona can offer. When Al Hilal signed him in 2024, reporting in the United States placed his pay at around $16.7 million per season, which underlines how far outside Barça’s wage structure that level would be.
If he wants to stay at Camp Nou, he would need to accept a very significant pay cut. Reports say Barça are willing to offer him a two-year contract as a sign of trust, but only within the club’s salary limits. The club’s view is that Cancelo’s desire to play for Barcelona could once again become decisive in making the numbers work.
That willingness matters a lot inside the club. Cancelo is seen as a player who has consistently shown affection for Barça and who places strong value on the sporting side of the project. Deco has reportedly highlighted that attachment as something unusual and important in the modern market.
Flick sees him as a key tactical wildcard
The German coach has ended up delighted with what Cancelo brings. He has not only performed well, but also offered solutions in very different situations. Flick publicly praised his display after the win over Rayo, describing his game as “incredible” and underlining his importance at a time when Barcelona are dealing with several defensive absences.
Cancelo has played on both flanks, and that flexibility is one of the things Barça value most. His attacking instincts, his ability to join the play and his tactical adaptability have been central in convincing Flick that he should remain part of the squad next season. The specific point about both flanks is an inference from the role he has been praised for and the reporting around his usefulness.
He also adds something in the dressing room. He is experienced, integrated and already understands the style of the team, which makes him a very practical option in a squad that does not have much margin for expensive mistakes. That last point is an inference based on his prior spell at Barça and the current reporting around keeping him.
If Cancelo fails, Barça already have a Plan B
Even with the optimism around the player, Barcelona are not leaving everything in his hands. If Cancelo cannot secure his release or does not accept the required financial conditions, the club already have alternatives under consideration. That is one reason why full-back remains an active file in the sporting department’s summer planning.
The priority, though, is now very clear. Flick wants Cancelo, and the club do too. Everything depends on a decisive step away from the pitch. If the Portuguese defender manages to leave Al Hilal for free and agrees to the economic effort Barça are asking for, his continuity at the club will be much closer to becoming reality.
