The Dutchman is highly liked for his speed, build-up play and ability to defend large spaces.
Micky van de Ven has entered the list of centre-backs being followed by FC Barcelona. The Tottenham defender is liked because his qualities fit Hansi Flick very well. There is no formal offer, but his name already appears on Barça’s agenda.
Barça are looking for fast, dominant defenders prepared to hold a very high line. In that context, Van de Ven represents an almost perfect profile through physique and left foot. The problem is that taking him from London will not be easy for Deco.
A centre-back very much to Flick’s taste
Van de Ven stands out because of his unusual speed for a centre-back his size. His ability to run backwards allows him to defend huge spaces with security. That quality is key for a Barça side that wants to press high.
The Dutchman also offers clean build-up play, something fundamental in the blaugrana model. He can carry the ball, attract opponents and activate passes into interior zones. That mix of power and technique makes him a very modern centre-back.
Flick especially values players able to correct structural mistakes with legs and concentration. Van de Ven can protect transitions, win long duels and give continuity from deep. That is why his profile fits better than slower or purely positional defenders.
Tottenham do not want to lose him easily
The biggest obstacle is Tottenham’s position, with the player contractually protected. Van de Ven signed until 2029, giving the English club enormous control. Spurs do not need to sell cheaply or accept anything below exceptional.
In England, very high figures have even been mentioned to open negotiations. Tottenham consider the Dutchman a strategic piece inside their sporting reconstruction. The Premier League also makes every young, differential player much more expensive.
Barça know they cannot enter an uncontrolled auction for a centre-back. Their economic situation forces them to seek creative formulas or market opportunities. For now, Van de Ven looks more like a complicated desire than an immediate operation.
Liverpool also appear in the scene
Barça are not the only major club following the Dutch centre-back’s situation. Liverpool would also be attentive, especially if they renew important defensive pieces. That competition could make any blaugrana attempt even more difficult this summer.
For Van de Ven, interest from historic clubs confirms his progression has not gone unnoticed. His Premier League level and presence with the Netherlands have raised his profile. Barça are watching because these centre-backs often become impossible very quickly.
The blaugrana sporting department have already studied similar profiles in recent weeks. Gvardiol, Vitor Reis and other fast defenders have appeared in club analysis. The idea is clear: Flick wants a faster, more aggressive and dominant defence.
A name to follow closely
The operation still looks early, but the interest makes sense from a sporting view. Van de Ven offers left foot, speed, power and competitive experience in a demanding league. Those are conditions Barça need if they want to raise their defensive level.
Deco must decide whether this name deserves to move beyond simple monitoring. For that, sales, salary margin and a more flexible Tottenham position are needed. Without those factors, the signing remains far from Barça’s current possibilities.
Barça observe, ask and wait for a crack that is not obvious today. Tottenham control the situation, Liverpool are watching and Flick needs top-level solutions. The twist is clear: Van de Ven is highly liked, but turning interest into a signing would be a huge battle.
Caution note: At the time of writing, there is no official agreement between Barça, Tottenham and Micky van de Ven.
