Jules Koundé is facing a much more delicate summer than expected at FC Barcelona. The French defender has a long contract, but his sporting situation has changed. Hansi Flick would no longer see him as an untouchable piece in his project.
The blaugrana club need major income, salary margin and quick decisions before closing planning. That is why a big sale before the World Cup ends cannot be ruled out. The Premier League appears as the most likely destination if that door opens.
Flick wants a more reliable defence
Flick wants an aggressive, focused defence capable of covering big spaces behind. In that scenario, Koundé has lost part of his previous internal credit. The German coach has reportedly detected doubts in his recent consistency and performances.
The Frenchman remains a high-level player, with international experience and valuable versatility. He can play centre-back, right-back or as a third defender in build-up. But that versatility has also created doubts about his definitive role.
For several seasons, Koundé has played away from his most natural position. That adaptation made him important, but also damaged part of his sporting image. Now, with Flick demanding maximum reliability, his continuity is under review.
The Premier prepare the ground
The English market remains very attentive to any major movement around the defender. Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United have been linked with his situation. All three value his physique, speed, experience and open-field defensive ability.
Barça do not want to gift away a player renewed until 2030. However, an offer between €60 million and €80 million could change everything. That money would create margin and help reinforce other priority areas.
The sporting department know selling Koundé would be a strong and controversial decision. He is a regular starter, a France international and a player with European weight. But Barça must balance sporting ambition with financial reality this summer.
The World Cup could accelerate everything
France’s World Cup debut added even more attention around the Barça defender. The French national team won, but the tournament could influence his valuation directly. A strong tournament would protect his price, while doubts could strengthen internal debate.
Barça do not want to wait too long if a powerful offer arrives. Solving the exit early would allow them to search for a replacement calmly. Flick would also avoid starting preseason with an uncomfortable file still open.
The contractual situation gives Barça strength, but does not remove market tension. Koundé is not close to ending his deal, so Barça can demand heavily. Any buyer must move strongly if they want to open real negotiations.
An exit that would change the defence
Koundé’s departure would force Barça to reorganise the right side and defensive line. He has been important because he covers several positions with immediate reliability. Losing him would require hierarchy, speed and experience in an expensive market.
The club have internal alternatives, but none offers exactly the same profile. Pau Cubarsí, Ronald Araújo and others can sustain the structure defensively. But Deco would need to move quickly if the operation advances.
Barça will listen to proposals, but they do not want to look forced. Flick wants clarity, the Premier has money and Koundé faces decisive weeks. The twist is clear: if an offer close to €70 million arrives, the case could explode before the World Cup ends.
Caution note: At the time of writing, there is no official agreement between Barça, any Premier League club and Jules Koundé.
