FC Barcelona have taken an important step in the Anthony Gordon file. talkSPORT, citing Fabrizio Romano, claims the Catalan club have already started direct talks with Newcastle United to study the operation. The same information adds that the player is interested in the possibility of playing in Barcelona.
That detail changes the reading of a negotiation that recently seemed much more distant. It also fits with what had already been reported in Spain over recent weeks. AS placed Gordon among the names most liked by Deco and Hansi Flick, while Mundo Deportivo described him as one of the priority targets for the left side of the attack.
Barça see him as a player capable of acting as a left winger and also in more central attacking areas. That versatility is especially valuable after Robert Lewandowski’s exit. It gives Flick one player for several possible roles.
Deco accelerates the file
The operation gains weight because the interest is no longer being interpreted as simple market monitoring. Recent reports suggest Barça want to test how far this route can go. They also want to know whether the player’s willingness can become a real advantage.
The club are not alone in this race. Bayern Munich have been following the England international for some time, while several Premier League clubs remain attentive. That means Barça need more than simple interest to stay competitive.
At Camp Nou, however, they believe the player’s desire could become an important lever. If Gordon truly prioritises the Barça project, Deco could gain strength against richer rivals. That is the card the sporting director wants to use.
The price remains the great wall
The major obstacle remains the same: money. AS places Newcastle’s demand close to €80 million, while Mundo Deportivo and other reports speak of an even higher range between €85 million and €90 million. Some formulas could bring the operation closer to €75-85 million with variables.
Even so, that valuation remains far above what Barça currently consider reasonable. Gordon is highly rated, but this is still not an easy or imminent deal. For the Catalan club, the financial structure would need to be very creative.
Newcastle also negotiate from a position of total strength. Sky Sports confirmed that Anthony Gordon has a contract with Newcastle until 2030. That allows the English club to resist without urgency and demand a very high fee.
Flick sees him as useful in two roles
Sportingly, the interest is easy to understand. AS describes Gordon as an attacker very much to Flick’s taste because of his speed, ability to attack space and aggression in finishing areas. Mundo Deportivo also underlined that Barça value him because he can function as both winger and forward.
That detail is key in Barça’s summer roadmap. The club are not only looking for a wide player, but for profiles who can solve different attacking situations. Gordon fits quite well with the new attack being planned.
Still, liking the player is one thing and paying Newcastle’s asking price is another. Barça cannot compromise their entire margin on one operation. That is why the player’s will and the payment structure will be decisive.
Barça are serious, but the deal is still far away
The conclusion right now is quite clear. Barça are working on Anthony Gordon’s file, and the direct contacts reported in England confirm this is not simple market speculation. The player is open to listening, Deco wants to explore the move and Flick likes the profile.
But the signing remains very difficult, expensive and completely conditioned by Newcastle’s stance. While the English club continue demanding such a high figure and rely on a contract until 2030, the operation will remain serious, but still far from becoming an imminent arrival at the Spotify Camp Nou.
Caution note: this situation is based on reports from talkSPORT, Fabrizio Romano, AS, Mundo Deportivo and Sky Sports, not an official agreement completed between Barcelona and Newcastle.
