Anthony Gordon has become one of the hottest names in Barça’s market. Mundo Deportivo claims that Barcelona have advanced in their monitoring and that the English attacker prioritises the Catalan project ahead of other suitors such as Bayern Munich or Liverpool. That willingness from the player changes the scenario quite a lot, although it does not solve the main problem: the price.
The club’s interest has not appeared from nowhere. AS already reported weeks ago that Deco had held contacts with the player’s camp and that his name is not being treated as a simple alternative, but as an important bet to strengthen the attack. His profile fits very well because of his speed, dribbling and ability to play in several attacking positions, something especially valuable after Robert Lewandowski’s exit.
Deco has already moved for the Englishman
Barça’s movement goes beyond simple monitoring. Mundo Deportivo places Deco negotiating in London for the player and states that the club would consider offering him a long contract if the operation takes shape. Inside the sporting department, they value his ability to play both as a left winger and in more central attacking positions.
That detail is highly appreciated by Hansi Flick. The German coach wants more depth, aggression and profiles capable of attacking space more frequently. Gordon responds quite well to that idea and has therefore climbed positions in the summer attacking agenda.
This interest fits the new Barça project. The club want players who can add verticality and change the rhythm of matches. Gordon’s profile offers exactly that kind of threat.
Newcastle do not give in
The major barrier remains Newcastle United. AS places the operation close to €80 million, while other reports even speak of a range between €85 million and €90 million. For Barça, that figure is clearly above what they currently consider reasonable for a winger, no matter how much they like the player.
Newcastle’s position is also very strong. Sky Sports revealed in February that Anthony Gordon’s contract runs until 2030, which further strengthens the English club’s negotiating power. They are under no pressure to sell and, if they sit down to talk, they will do so from a position of maximum demand.
That makes the operation extremely difficult from an economic point of view. Barça can study the deal, speak with the player’s camp and keep the route alive. But reaching Newcastle’s asking price would require major sales or a very creative structure.
The player’s will can change everything
Even so, Barça believe they have one important card: the player’s own will. If Gordon truly maintains his preference for the Spotify Camp Nou, the Catalan club can gain strength in a negotiation that currently looks very uphill. His desire alone will not be enough, but it could force a more realistic conversation.
The conclusion inside Camp Nou is becoming quite clear. Anthony Gordon is highly rated, the player looks favourably on wearing blaugrana and Barça have already moved. But while Newcastle continue setting such a high price, the signing will remain as attractive as it is complicated.
Caution note: this situation is based on reports from Mundo Deportivo, AS and Sky Sports, not an official agreement completed between Barcelona and Newcastle.
