Álex Grimaldo has become one of FC Barcelona’s clearest targets for the summer transfer window. Deco and Hansi Flick are fully aligned on the need to strengthen the left-back position, and the former La Masia player is now seen as one of the most attractive opportunities on the market.
Barcelona have already started working on one of their clearest operations ahead of the new season. The club want to raise the competitive level on the left side of defence and give Flick more tactical options in a position where the squad currently depends on very specific profiles.
The financial context also pushes Barça toward this type of move. There will be no room for major spending, so the club are prioritising players who can offer immediate impact while also fitting within realistic economic limits.
That is exactly why Grimaldo’s name has moved so high on the internal shortlist.
A signing that fits both sporting and financial needs
Grimaldo checks several important boxes for Barcelona. He brings elite-level experience, a strongly attacking profile and a full understanding of the club’s footballing identity, something that would make his adaptation much easier than that of most external signings.
But the key point is his contract situation. He has a release clause of around €20 million, although the fact that he is entering the final stretch of his deal could open the door to a lower negotiated fee.
At Camp Nou, there is a belief that the final price could come down, which would make the deal one of the smartest market opportunities of the summer. On top of that, his salary is seen as manageable within Barça’s current structure.
Everything fits: performance, cost and timing.
Flick wants a more complete left-back
The interest is far from random. Flick is looking for a full-back with greater attacking weight, someone capable of creating, assisting and offering solutions high up the pitch.
That is exactly the kind of profile Grimaldo provides. He is not simply a defender, but a player with real attacking influence, quality delivery and the ability to shape games from wide areas.
Inside Barça, there is a clear feeling that his arrival would complement Alejandro Balde perfectly, offering a different kind of option on the left side and giving the squad more variety in that role.
The Barça connection could make the difference
There is also an emotional factor that matters. Grimaldo came through La Masia and has always maintained a strong connection with the club.
His return would not be seen only as a transfer, but also as the continuation of an unfinished story. Around Barcelona, that kind of detail always adds something extra.
There is also a belief that the wider context around Bayer Leverkusen could help make negotiations smoother than in other cases. That does not guarantee anything, but it does strengthen the feeling that this is a move with favourable conditions.
The name Barça already have in mind
With all of that on the table, the operation is already moving. Deco and Flick want Grimaldo, the context makes sense, and the market is presenting a clear opening.
Barcelona want to strengthen the left-back role, and they already know the profile they are looking for from the very beginning.
