Alessandro Bastoni has emerged as the primary defensive target for FC Barcelona ahead of the upcoming summer window. According to journalist Gianluigi Longari, the Italian centre-back’s name is firmly highlighted within the club’s internal planning. Inside Barça’s offices, he is viewed as the cornerstone addition to reshape the back line.
Bastoni remains under contract with Inter Milan until 2028. Despite that long-term agreement, talks over a potential renewal have not yet been fully finalised. That slight uncertainty is precisely the opening Barcelona are monitoring with interest.
For now, the defender continues to show full commitment to Inter’s sporting project. In Milan, he is considered a structural pillar of the team’s defensive identity. However, as the transfer window approaches, Barcelona’s attention is expected to intensify.
Flick’s defensive priority
Hansi Flick has identified the centre-back position as an area requiring immediate qualitative improvement. The German coach believes the defensive unit needs greater authority and composure at the highest competitive level. Bastoni fits that profile in terms of age, tactical maturity and European experience.
His left-footed presence would naturally balance the defensive line. Beyond that, he is known for his progressive distribution and comfort operating in high defensive blocks. In a market where elite left-sided centre-backs are scarce, his attributes stand out significantly.
Barcelona are fully aware that negotiations would be complex. Inter are not under financial pressure to sell, and the player’s contractual situation strengthens the Italian club’s position. Any movement would therefore demand strategic precision.
Deco’s calculated approach
Sporting director Deco is proceeding cautiously while keeping the objective clearly in sight. Financial Fair Play regulations, particularly the 1:1 rule, remain the main constraint shaping every decision. Without significant outgoing transfers, a major defensive investment would be difficult to execute.
Nevertheless, the absence of a completed renewal fuels optimism in Catalonia. Should discussions between Bastoni and Inter slow down or stall, Barcelona could intensify informal contacts. Timing will be decisive in determining whether interest evolves into action.
At present, there are no clear signals of tension between the player and his club. Equally, there has been no definitive public announcement securing his long-term extension. That ambiguity keeps the possibility alive.
A summer that could redefine the defence
Barcelona understand that any opening would attract fierce competition. Several Premier League clubs are also believed to admire Bastoni’s profile. As a result, Barça’s strategy will be discreet yet persistent.
Within the club’s planning, Bastoni is not viewed as a secondary alternative but as the ideal reinforcement to anchor the next defensive cycle. His blend of technical quality and positional intelligence aligns perfectly with Flick’s vision.
Whether that vision becomes a formal negotiation will depend on the summer’s evolving dynamics. For now, Alessandro Bastoni remains at the top of Barcelona’s defensive agenda.
