According to Carlos Monfort via SPORT, Joan Laporta has personally entered the Julián Álvarez operation. The Barça president has reportedly spoken with the striker’s agent in recent days. That contact changes the temperature around one of the summer’s biggest stories.
Until now, Deco had been leading the groundwork from the sporting area. But Laporta’s direct involvement sends a much stronger internal and external message. Barcelona are not treating Julián as another market possibility anymore.
The club see him as a forward capable of transforming Hansi Flick’s project immediately. His age, pressing, movement and finishing fit the profile Barça want long-term. The problem is that Atlético Madrid remain extremely difficult to move.
Laporta raises the pressure
When Laporta enters personally, the operation becomes political, strategic and emotional. Barça know a signing like this would change the mood around the club. It would also send a powerful message after years of financial limitations.
The president wants to understand the player’s real desire before pushing further. In deals of this size, the footballer’s will can become decisive. If Julián Álvarez pushes for Barça, Atlético’s position may face pressure.
The Argentine’s profile is almost perfect for Flick’s attacking structure. He can lead the line, press defenders and appear between the lines. That versatility explains why Barça see him as more than a simple striker.
Atlético remain firm
The biggest obstacle is still Atlético’s position, which remains very strong. The Madrid club do not want to sell their star this summer. His long contract also gives them full control over the situation.
Cadena SER reported Barça had already tried with a €100 million offer. That proposal was reportedly structured across long payment terms, which Atlético rejected. For now, the red-and-white club are demanding a much higher figure.
At the same time, Real Madrid have also been linked with a huge move. A possible €150 million offensive would raise the pressure even more. But the player’s camp reportedly still sees Barça as his preferred destination.
Barça need exits first
Barcelona cannot move seriously without creating financial space during the window. Deco must unlock exits, reduce salary weight and generate real transfer income. That is where Fair Play again becomes decisive for the whole plan.
Names such as Ferran Torres, Marc Casadó and Ansu Fati could influence the market indirectly. Not every case is identical, but Barça need oxygen before attacking. Without sales, this operation remains almost impossible at the required level.
The dressing room also knows a signing like this would shift expectations. Flick would receive a forward built for pressure, intensity and decisive nights. Barça want another leader, not just another attacking option.
Julián holds the key
For now, Julián Álvarez has become the great obsession of Barça’s summer. Atlético resist, Madrid threaten with money, and Barcelona need a creative formula. But Laporta’s move shows the club refuse to watch from distance.
The outcome may take time because nobody wants to reveal everything early. Barça need patience, exits and a very precise financial strategy. The twist is clear: Laporta is now talking because Julián has become presidential business.
Caution note: At the time of writing, there is no official agreement between Barça, Atlético Madrid and Julián Álvarez.
