FC Barcelona continue to scan the centre-back market before making a final decision this summer. According to Mundo Deportivo, Natan, defender of Real Betis, has been offered to the blaugrana club. The Brazilian has emerged as an interesting alternative if Deco decides to strengthen the left-sided centre-back position.
The name has not appeared by chance, as Barça want to keep track of physical defenders already adapted to LaLiga. Natan is 25 years old, stands at 1.88 metres and is known for his strength in defensive duels. His left-footed profile also fits a position that Hansi Flick considers particularly important.
The operation is not advanced at this stage, but the player’s camp has already made moves. His agent, André Cury, met with Deco to discuss the conditions of a possible transfer. The message is clear: Natan would only leave Betis for a major step forward such as Barça.
Betis hold a valuable asset
Real Betis have no intention of giving away a player they consider important. The Andalusian club activated their purchase option after his loan spell from Napoli. The deal was completed for €9 million and tied the Brazilian to the club until 2030.
That long contract allows Betis to negotiate from a position of strength this summer. According to Mundo Deportivo, a transfer could cost around €30 million plus €5 million in add-ons. Such a fee would represent a huge profit after their relatively recent investment.
Barça, meanwhile, must carefully evaluate whether such an investment truly fits their plans. Deco still has several open files and attacking priorities that also require significant financial resources. For that reason, Natan is viewed as a serious option, but not yet a priority target.
A profile that appeals to Flick
Natan possesses characteristics that fit the new defensive blueprint Barça are building. He is dominant in the air, quick for his size and aggressive when stepping out of defence. He can also initiate attacks with his left foot, a trait that is highly valued in the current market.
Reports highlight his ability to operate on either side of central defence. They also underline his pace in open spaces and his comfort defending far from his own penalty area. That quality is especially important for a Barça side aiming to press high without becoming vulnerable in transition.
His goal against Barça also helped underline his competitive qualities. Natan showcased his aerial strength against the blaugrana at the Olympic Stadium. In set-piece situations, he can provide a threat that Barça have sometimes lacked in recent seasons.
A more realistic alternative
Barça have monitored more expensive names to reinforce the heart of the defence. Alessandro Bastoni, Castello Lukeba and other elite European options would require significantly higher fees. Compared to them, Natan represents a more affordable route within LaLiga.
Several reports describe him as a cheaper alternative to Bastoni. His physical strength, left-footed profile and valuation around €30 million make him an attractive option if more ambitious targets prove unattainable.
Being already adapted to Spanish football also reduces the risk for Flick. He would not require a lengthy adjustment period to the league, language or competitive environment. For a squad that wants to compete immediately from August, that detail carries considerable value.
Deco already knows the conditions
The key question is whether Barça will actively enter the market for a centre-back. If no major defensive departures occur, the operation may remain under observation only. But if players such as Ronald Araújo or Jules Koundé move on, Natan could quickly rise in priority.
The player would reportedly be willing to wait for a potential opportunity at Barça if circumstances develop. He is not looking to force an exit from Betis at any cost. However, he understands that joining Barcelona would represent the biggest step of his career.
The market still has many pieces to settle before Deco makes a definitive decision. Natan has been offered, Betis have set their valuation and André Cury has kept communication channels open. And that is the twist: he may not be the most glamorous name available, but he could be the most realistic defensive signing on Barça’s shortlist.
