Andreas Christensen, aged 29, is entering his fourth season with FC Barcelona. As things stand, this could be his last year with Barça since his current contract ends on June 30. However, the Danish center-back is determined to continue his journey with the Blaugrana. Despite spending almost all of last season sidelined due to injuries, Christensen now feels 100% fit and aims to earn back the trust of Flick to prove he can still be a valuable asset for Barça.
The departure of Iñigo Martínez to Al Nassr this summer has opened up opportunities for a starting position, as only Cubarsí remains a fixture in the coach’s plans at the moment. Christensen is aware of this and is determined to fight for a spot in the starting lineup.
Turned Down Multiple Offers This Summer
This summer, Christensen received numerous offers but never considered leaving Barça. He wasn’t swayed by the lucrative deals from Saudi Arabia, offers from the Premier League, where he still has a strong reputation from his time at Chelsea, nor from the Bundesliga or fellow La Liga teams. Both Christensen and his family feel very settled at the club and in the city, and their desire is to stay. In fact, Andreas’ partner is expecting their third child, and they believe they won’t find a better place than Barcelona to raise their family.
There has yet to be any contact between Christensen’s father and agent and Barça’s sporting director, Deco, regarding his contract renewal. However, discussions could begin in the coming weeks. For the moment, Christensen prefers to focus on regaining Flick’s confidence. He knows that being an important part of the team is his best chance to fulfill his dream of staying with FC Barcelona.
Possibilities Against Newcastle
The Dane did not play a minute in the last match against Valencia—Flick opted for Cubarsí and Eric—but he recently featured for his national team in matches against Scotland and Greece, scoring a remarkable goal in the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium. Flick might hand him a start against Newcastle this Thursday at St. James’ Park.
