Manchester City prepare €70 million for a Barça player

Vitor Reis has entered FC Barcelona’s orbit as a defensive option for the future. The Brazilian centre-back belongs to Manchester City and spent this season on loan at Girona. His performances in LaLiga have caught the attention of Hansi Flick and Deco.

Barça have not launched a formal offensive, but they have gathered information about him. The sporting department want to know what plans City have for the young defender. Barça’s idea would be exploring a loan with purchase option if a real window appears.

A centre-back who fits Flick’s model

Vitor Reis is liked because he has several qualities Barça are looking for. He is right-footed, young, quick in recovery and comfortable defending far from goal. His ball-playing ability also fits a defence that wants to dominate from behind.

At Girona, he has gained minutes, rhythm and experience in a demanding context. Míchel used him as an important piece in a line needing personality. That growth strengthened the feeling that he can soon compete at a major club.

Barça especially value centre-backs capable of playing with space behind them. Reis can carry, filter passes and sustain high pressure with defensive reading. That profile is rare in the market and usually reaches very high prices.

Gvardiol is also on the radar

Barça have also looked at Joško Gvardiol, another Manchester City defender they really like. The Croatian fits through physique, technical quality, experience and defensive versatility. However, his operation is considered much more expensive, complex and difficult.

Gvardiol represents an almost ideal profile for any elite European club. He has power, clean build-up and enormous ability defending in open spaces. But City do not need to sell, and his price is far from Barça’s reach.

That is why Vitor Reis appears as a more realistic route inside Barça. The Brazilian is still developing and could arrive through a more manageable formula. Gvardiol is liked, but Reis fits better with lower immediate risk.

City still have to decide

The big obstacle is Manchester City’s position, because they fully control his future. The English club paid an important fee to Palmeiras and signed him until 2029. That makes any operation neither simple nor cheap for European suitors.

City must decide whether to integrate him or accept another competitive loan. His spell at Girona served its purpose by giving him European minutes. However, Girona’s relegation complicates repeating exactly the same formula next season.

That is where Barça could find an opportunity if City seek another development destination. The good relationship between Deco and Hugo Viana may help initial talks. But City will not lose control over a centre-back considered strategic.

Barça look for imaginative solutions

Barça’s priority remains the centre-forward position, with Julián Álvarez as the main name. Even so, the sporting department have not parked the need to strengthen defence. Flick wants a deeper, faster squad ready to compete all season.

The blaugrana club are studying formulas that avoid major immediate investments. A loan with purchase option would allow them to test the player first. That model fits Barça’s current financial reality and recent market behaviour.

The operation would depend on many factors, starting with City’s real plans. The situation of Barça’s current centre-backs and possible exits would also matter. Barça do not want to sign for the sake of signing.

A name for 2027, but watched now

Inside the club, they believe Vitor Reis could become an impact player medium-term. He is not viewed as an immediate emergency, but as a piece for 2027. His age, growth margin and recent LaLiga experience make the monitoring logical.

Other offered centre-backs, like Luka Vuskovic, look much more complicated by price and context. Tottenham have no intention of facilitating a cheap operation for the Croatian. That is why Vitor Reis appears more realistic if City open the door.

For now, Barça only observe, ask and measure an operation still at an early stage. But the interest exists because the profile fits and defensive bargains are rare. The twist is clear: if City accept a loan with option, Vitor Reis could become an unexpected opportunity.

Caution note: At the time of writing, there is no official agreement between Barça, Manchester City and Vitor Reis.
