Ferran Torres has suddenly found himself at the centre of one of Barcelona’s biggest transfer stories of the summer. According to Gerard Romero, Atlético Madrid are interested in signing the Barça forward. That interest could have major consequences for the club’s pursuit of Julián Álvarez.
The situation becomes even more important because of Ferran’s contract. Barcelona officially tied him down until June 2027, meaning he is now entering the final stretch of his deal. With only one year remaining after next season begins, Barça will soon need to decide whether to renew him or cash in.
The club are determined to avoid losing a valuable asset for free. If renewal talks fail to progress, a transfer becomes a realistic possibility. And that is where Atlético’s interest starts to take on greater significance.
Ferran could become a key bargaining chip
Atlético’s interest arrives at a moment when Barcelona are desperately searching for ways to make the Julián Álvarez operation more achievable. The Argentine remains one of Hansi Flick’s dream targets, but Atlético have no intention of making negotiations easy.
That is why creative solutions are already being discussed. Including Ferran in a larger deal could help reduce the overall cost of a transfer that would otherwise require an enormous financial commitment. From Atlético’s perspective, they would receive an experienced attacker who already knows La Liga and has proven himself at the highest level.
However, the player’s own stance remains crucial. Ferran cannot simply be included in a swap unless he agrees to leave Barcelona. Up to this point, his priority has always been to succeed at the club and continue fighting for his place.
Barcelona must make a decision
Barcelona face a complicated summer in attack. Anthony Gordon has already strengthened the wing positions, while the club continue their search for an elite striker capable of leading the next generation.
In that context, Ferran’s contractual situation becomes increasingly important. Recent reports have suggested that Barça are willing to listen to offers while simultaneously exploring options in the market. The club understand that waiting too long could weaken their negotiating position.
From a sporting perspective, Ferran still offers plenty of value. Flick appreciates his versatility, with the Spaniard capable of operating as a winger, centre-forward or second attacker. Yet Barcelona must decide whether keeping him is more beneficial than using him as part of a major transfer strategy.
Julián changes everything
The pursuit of Julián Álvarez remains one of the most ambitious operations of Barça’s summer. Atlético consider the Argentine a cornerstone of their project and have publicly shown little willingness to negotiate.
Barcelona know they will need money, patience and possibly pressure from the player himself if they are to have any chance of success. Including Ferran could make a proposal more attractive and help soften the blow for Atlético if they were forced to consider a sale.
Even so, there are no guarantees. Atlético may still prefer a huge cash offer rather than accepting players as part of the package. Ferran therefore represents a possibility rather than a definitive solution.
An emotional decision
The situation is not purely financial. Ferran remains well respected inside the dressing room and has enjoyed several important moments in a Barcelona shirt. His recent performances have shown improvement and he still believes he can contribute to Flick’s project.
A move to Atlético would offer regular opportunities in a competitive environment while allowing him to remain in La Liga. It could also strengthen his chances of remaining an important figure for the Spanish national team.
The coming weeks will determine whether Atlético’s interest develops into something concrete. Barcelona must choose between extending his contract, selling him outright or potentially using him as part of a much bigger operation. And that is the twist: Ferran Torres could go from a contract dilemma to one of the keys that unlocks Julián Álvarez.
Caution note: This report is based on media claims and transfer speculation. At the time of writing, there is no official confirmation that Barcelona and Atlético Madrid are negotiating a swap involving Ferran Torres and Julián Álvarez, nor that either player has agreed to such a move.
